Thanks, guys! I might pick up a pair of 128GB UHS-II Lexar cards (about 250 MBps speed) for $64 on Amazon. I'm not a big spray and pray shooter anyway and I suspect I'll be fine with them.

First time out this year with the R7. Went up to the Out of Africa wildlife park in Camp Verde Arizona on a nice cloudy Saturday. With the cool weather the animals were nice and active

Some shots of the lions

Not sure what you have done in post but the details in the fur and eyes are outstanding. Very impressive and from a crop sensor even more impressive

I'll be getting my R7 tomorrow, along with the RF 100-400. Hope to lighten the load from my 5 and 100-500.
Just curious- have any amateurs here (esp. wildlife/bird shooters) considered selling their 5 after using this camera? I like to shoot video as well, and the 5 doesn't work for me in that regard.
Thanks!

Hi Mark,
What did not work RE: the 5 for you in video? I have both the R5 and the R7. Have shot some video on both. I'm liking the R7 a lot in 4K crop, as it has a 1.81 crop factor in addition to the asp-c 1.6, so much more reach. I usually shot the R5 in crop mode with for me good results. What did not work for you on the R5 video.
I have some of my videos on Youtube. Most of the recent ones are R7.

I sold my R5 for the R6II and R7. I'll see in a few weeks if I made a mistake. :-)

Thanks for the reply, Dave- I live in Boise and it can be really hot and sunny. I set it up on sticks in the sun to do some remote shooting (as done with my R), and it overheated in minutes. I had same issue with the R, which I covered in white, but not to that extent. Unacceptable for me.

I haven't been doing as much video lately because of the weight issue as well. Can't carry around anything like the old (and great!) rig that I had in the past.
I bought the 100-400 to have a more nimble walk-around photo setup, and since I'm thinking of getting a gimbal, the lighter weight there would be a real plus.

A different question: Anyone using one of the available L-brackets for the 7?

Do you shoot video in 4K or 1080. I saw on your You Tube most seemed 1080.

I shoot with the 100-500 a lot. Great results. My wife has a R7 and the RF 100-400. That is one sweet lens. Very sharp, quick focus and light. The kit lens that comes with the R7 18-150, is very light and seems to take good photos.
For wildlife when I need reach I have been shooting video in 4k crop mode. Seems to do well if supported well. Equal to 1158 mm with your 100-400.
Good luck and have fun.

I agree about the RF 100-400. My wife likes it too because of its lightness but I find it plenty sharp enough for most purposes, especially as the R7's crop sensor is only using the centre part of the image circle, and responsive too. I'm not so enamoured with the 18-150 but it's small and light and a good walk-around lens if critical sharpness isn't so important (i.e. for web display).

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

A couple more with the Sigma 150-600C. I have to say, the AF has been much more challenging than I recall when I was using it with the R5, but you can get good results.

Pippan wrote in post #19467346 (external link)
Nice photos, the bird really stands out. Challenging in terms of acquiring and sticking with focus, or in terms of setup?

PinholeR5 wrote in post #19467350 (external link)
Thanks.

The challenge is with maintaining focus. The acquisition is a bit slower than, say, the RF 100-400 or even the Sigma 100-400, but not too bad. The problem is that it keeps losing focus and having to reacquire quite frequently. For smaller birds, it can get pretty bad. I've seen some reviews and comments that describe "pulsing" with the R7. Maybe that is what I experienced. Not sure. The 1.4x TC makes it worse (using the Sigma TC-1401) I've only had it for two days with quick trips to the park, but it is quite noticeable.

I don't recall any of this with the R5. Will try it out sometime.

RodS57 wrote in post #19467352 (external link)
Maybe your sigma requires a firmware update. My Tamron 150-600 G2 requires a firmware update to work properly with the Canon R series bodies. That is the response I received from Tamron.

Not that. Both lens and camera have the latest FW. It seems to struggle with smaller subjects. For example, it struggled with the bird below but had a much easier time with the squirrel, even thought the latter was with the TC. Both images are just Faithful Camera Matching Color + Auto Tone in LR.

While I expect that in general, my R7 doesn't seem to have the same issue with the RF 600 f/11, the RF 100-400mm + RF 1.4TC or the Sigma 100-400mm + S TC-1401.

So I experimented some more with the Sigma 150-600C. I looked up the recommendations here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7TEu1Tgq5I (external link)

and used the USB Doc to set the OIS to: Moderate View Mode in the custom menus. I've always had Fast AF in C1 and Smooth AF in C2, however, I've always left the OIS in Standard mode. Now I changed it to Moderate View Mode and it seems to be much, much better. Not perfect, but a significant improvement to the point that I don't feel like making other changes (In the video they suggest messing with the AF Case settings specifically for the lens, but that is too much for me).

They’re all in 1080 (and some look worse). I capture in 4K and use it in 1080 projects, doing a lot of cropping/Ken Burns. I believe the few people who see my work will only ever view it in that format. I should probably do some in 4K for my own viewing pleasure on my tv :-P.
Agreed on the lens- the only gear I've ever pre-ordered!
