Thanks for the reply, Dave- I live in Boise and it can be really hot and sunny. I set it up on sticks in the sun to do some remote shooting (as done with my R), and it overheated in minutes. I had same issue with the R, which I covered in white, but not to that extent. Unacceptable for me.
I haven't been doing as much video lately because of the weight issue as well. Can't carry around anything like the old (and great!) rig that I had in the past.
I bought the 100-400 to have a more nimble walk-around photo setup, and since I'm thinking of getting a gimbal, the lighter weight there would be a real plus.
I suspect all the mirror less cameras of any make are prone to overheat, I know the R7 runs much warmer than any of my DSLRs.
Turning down the VF update rate might help with the heating.
Any kind of shade you can rig up to keep the direct sun off should reduce the heat issue a lot. A white cover will still warm and conduct heat.
