I like the unconventional composition of the first.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

thank you, but it was unintentional as I was shooting handheld, so the camera was super wobbly :p

keep in mind then. Negative space like that can make a statement.

This is the best I can do so far with the RF 100-400. I guess I shouldn't expect much from a $500 zoom, but I can't get this thing to focus on anything if I'm zoomed out past 200-250mm, unless it's blinding sunlight and the subject is a black pole on a white background -?
(BTW, I shot this amidst the largest songbird flock I've ever seen- hundreds of robins flying over/around me constantly!)

My problem is with the 100-400, not the 100-500.
I use spot, one point, multi-point, and up. Whichever method, if I'm zoomed out to 400, it ain't gonna focus, or even search. If it's been previously focused on that spot/distance, it will pick it up, otherwise staring at a blurry screen. If I dial it back to 200mm, it will focus. :-x
I've sometimes had a similar problem with the 100-500, but not like this.

The R7 has to be able to recognize the subject to focus on it. So if it is just a blur, it won't AF. It's not clear if this is your situation, though.

Might be a lens fault, or one of the myriad settings gone awry, as I’ve had no issue with my RF100-400 on R7, in fact I’m quite impressed with the images from such a cheap zoom.

You can get that stuck on last focus effect with tracking on. As avoidance for that I have backup focus methods on an alternative back button set.

So for still birds I have no AF on shutter, AFON back button set to full area, animal tracking eye detect. The * back button set to fine point AF no tracking. Else you can MF to get roughly on focus plane if the 100-400 supports FTMF.

Another thing to check is the camera is set to search for focus when focus is impossible.

Good luck.

Considering the price delta from the 100-500 it is impressive.

No regrets over the 100-500 cost hit however.
