If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Was it actively tracking focus during the raw burst?

Is anyone using the Spider Pro carrier with the R7? If so, I'd like to hear your impression of it, especially as pertains to use with a longer lens (EF70-200 plus adapters).

With improved weather in califonia, i was able to go out finally with my R7 and R100-500. i use BFF - i am not sure if i have a bad copy of the lens or affected by heat haze. DPP 4 shows AF box right over the bird but the bird is NOT in focus. I have left 4 files in this google-drive share. They contain CR3, camera generated JPG and and PNG showing where the AF red-box is. The issue is there for both static and BIF shots. Even the best BIFF is not Sharp.

1) too much expecation from Crop Sensor ?
2) Camera settings ?
3) bad lens copy ?

Looking @6117 is this a crop of 6127 or just at different focal lengths? (I am just viewing on the iphone so i can't check right now).

Looking at the focus box it looks like a tracking box without successful eye detection. Can you clarify the focus modes used?

Assuming 6117 is full frame I would expect the camera to pull in on the subject and if eye detection was enabled put a small square box around the eye.

It is possible here it has got stuck on the foreground but that does not explain 6067 where this is competing subject.

I'm not BIF expert but in all of those pics the subject is so small that you need to go to 100% to get much.

6077 is really contrasty.
6127 has a really slow shutter speed. It and the similar one are going to be challenging focus situations anyway with the grass in front of the bird. And again, small subjects at 500mm. f/10 probably didn't help.
6137 looks great in the complete frame, and not bad at all with some sharpening when cropped by about half. At 100% view it's typical of 100% crops... you can see all of the pixel raggedness at the edges.

You may be falling into the trap of using a long lens to find stuff that's farther away rather than fill the frame with stuff that's closer.

Wild Mustang shaking the dust off after rolling around in the dirt. They were adopted by the ranch and are used for breeding with registered horses.

Close to 100% crop.

What time of the day did you shoot? If it is any time after say 9 am or 10 am, heat haze can be a real issue, especially as some of the shots appear to have been of distant subjects across a wide valley. Thermals can pay havoc with your seeing due to refractive index variations in the air.
