Not quite sure if this is a silly question or not in such a learned thread. But do I go for the RF100-500L or keep my 100-400L mkII with the 1.4x extender and also keep a couple of grand in my pocket?
The results I have seen with either lens on the R7 leave me on the brink of flipping a coin.-? Just need an opinion - thanks.

See if you are happy with the AF, and if you are not, then take into account comparisons from people who use both on the R7.

You can set sound and adjust volume for Electronic Shutter, I have and find it works for me!

I found Levina's report about the sound disturbing and that was the first time I ever thought about cancelling my pre-order. However, what sounds obnoxious to a human may not sound obnoxious to birds, and I would probably want to see if it scares birds in the real world before I considered it an actual problem.

A stacked sensor could give a fast-rolling electronic shutter, but stacked sensors at this point in time seem to have an image noise penalty at this point in time; neither the R3 nor the Sonys with stacked sensors have impressive noise character. Sure, they're better than cameras of a decade ago, but not up to the best current sensors for noise.

here is some of that electronic shutter awesomeness with the r7. still, i remain 100% es. i'll perhaps engage the mechanical shutter at some point if i feel there is something critical. but after lavina's description of the shutter sound, i'll probably stay away as much as possible.

at first it was really strange having no sound. now, i almost can't stand having any sound.

Yep, that is what I like about the Electronic Shutter. I can customize the sound to zero! That is, no sound at all! :)

Indeed it has been.
May be we should have a sticky for the forum where all such videos sit.
Try finding something later and you know what I mean.

I kind of remember this being discussed earlier in the thread..

BBF vs SBF

with my 90D I was using back button focus but had heard that with mirrorless you would want to use shutter button focus to use the entire field, all the points.
I have also heard that using BBF once it locks on and you release it it will track focus while you shoot bursts.

For me a typical "shoot" is as I get the bird in the FOV I will squeeze a few shots off and then try to follow it and shoot several more bursts. In a typical shoot in about 2-3 seconds I will get in about 3 or 4 bursts.

Will BBF continue to track after you release the button? I know SBF refocuses every time you hit the shutter button and in todays incoming mallard there were a couple bursts that were out of focus

I have used BBF since the 20D, if in servo it tracks focus while pressed and stops if released. A repress reaquires focus this the technique of pumping if the tracking gets pulled off.

I assume the R7 Is the same.

Wow, this thread is blowing up this forum!

While it's great to see this level of excitment and intrigue (and infighting too!) over this new model, it's generating an incredible, probably record setting number of new posts. I checked here less than 24 hours ago and read everything only to find when I checked in just now 82 new posts in this thread!

That number can be reduced by about 1/3 if people would only start using the MQ button instead of creating back to back, individual posts every time. MQ stands for multi-quote. Yes, it's a tiny bit more work while compiling your reply but it would make for a cleaner and easier to read forum experience. In this 82 posts for 20 hour period, I counted at least 10 occasions where there were 2 or even 3 back to back posts from the same person. The MQ feature would allow for the same thing with LESS posts and would be MORE organized and easier to follow.

Watch, now there'll be a couple of dozen posts scolding me for moderating!:lol::lol:

I went to the countryside today. Took the R7 with me. Went looking for barn swallows. Just two shots of a whole lot of good shots. However, these are jpegs SOOC. I just cropped and resized them. The camera performed pretty well out there, as long as the birds weren't too far away.

EDIT: the camera did a decent job processing the files, but not exactly how I myself would do it, so I will process the raw files in the coming days. I'm too tired right now, hence a couple of jpegs.

I know how tough swallows are to capture! I get about a 2% hit rate if I am lucky! Are you using BBF or SBF?

LESTER
That answers a question for me, when you let go of the BB it stops tracking. I need to check out my AF settings for style stickiness etc....

I know right? I check it once or twice during the day when I'm at work and there are 30-50 new posts!
