I would be interested to to see handheld shots with the R7 and 100-500 in overcast conditions or early/late in the day. Most stuff so far is with very good light, high shutter speeds and lowish ISOs.

How good is the IS on static subjects etc.

This one was taken around 5 minutes after sunrise with the R7 and 100-500 f7.1. The sun wasn't high enough to light up the Rabbit yet, so was still in shade.

I've been thinking of doing the same: going to a store and just look at the differences. Bringing a few images of my own is a good idea, I hadn't thought of that. I have to get a new display. The NEC monitor I have was wonderful but it has a yellow tint in the upper left corner that is growing. Calibration is still possible, but targets cannot be met any more. I have no idea at the moment how my images look. Everything looks off. I really need something else. I am procrastinating though because I want the Eizo but it's expensive. I also need a new Mac. And I bought a new camera. It's getting a bit much...

Thanks for sharing your swallow images. A bit OT but have you considered the Benq monitor

Not exactly what you are asking for, but,,,,ISO8000 on overcast day with sun still behind trees.1/1600 F7.1 500mm Hand held . Heron was starting to take-off.

Thanks, I was interested to see how far you can push the IS @500 or more with the TC, ie 1/800 to 1/500 wide open. This is more like the conditions I have to shoot in with the 7D2 and Tamzooka; 1/640 600mm f/6.3 iso 1600 is fairly common.

I would hope the R7+100-500 would have better IS and perhaps permit lower handheld speeds.

Those birds are awfully far away. I now understand why you need the long glass. Tough conditions, especially since these birds are very small.

By the way, you are right, they’re not barn swallows.

Still waiting for user review of R7 BIF performance with a 1.4x and either the ef 100-400ii or rf 100-500... :-D

Will, I tried it out for you early this morning when there was barely any light. R7+100-500+1.4x. Performance was excellent. Camera and lens performed as if the extender wasn’t there: focus was quick and accurate, no hunting. All the more remarkable as I was shooting in very low light at very high ISO levels. But none of it was a problem.

Ok. Well. That is impressive detail.
Do much processing and sharpening?

I did a bit more processing on these, but not a large amount. I used Topaz NR and some masking and color grading to try to reduce the harshness of the light. There wasn't really much of a crop, so they looked ok, especially scaled down to 1600x1067 :)

Just checked on my order with Park Cameras here in the UK, the reply was not encouraging:

Thank you for your email. Unfortunately Canon have not informed us how many units we are due to take on our next consignment which is due around the 29th of this month. We cannot guarantee that your order would receive stock from this delivery as there are a few order placed before yours. It may be that your camera will be arriving to us on one of our following consignments. Unfortunately until Canon respond to our requests for the numbers due we cannot make a guarantee i'm afraid. We simply allocate base on when the order was placed.

Other people seem to be getting more positive feedback so I can only assume they are in the que ahead of me. vmad-?

Ah, no! Low light, very high ISO, resulting in tons of noise. I looked at the pics to check if focus was actually achieved (yes), and deleted all of them.

I also tried the RF 100-500mm with the 1.4x TC and had no issues with the TC making it hard to focus. The Heron in the post quoted above was with the 2x TC, though I had to back it out to 300mm because it was close to me. It is ok, but I it struggled a bit. It was hot weather so anything a bit further out didn't look that great, so hard to tell from an IQ perspective, but tracking was OK.

out of camera jpeg, reduced to 1600 for upload, and a 100% crop of same image to show detail available.

IMHO, looking on screen, 100% it's not bad, but it does begin to look push to far,. viewing the same image in PSCS with the navigation slider set down a bump to 66% it looks really good.

Very nice and its 5000 ISO as well....pretty much seals the deal for me...I am concerned about noise comments but this looks fantastic for 5000

Not with the TC, but on the lower side of shutter speed. Handheld, not using great technique. The subject isn't exactly static so this is as low as I got. Not bad, I think. The original and a 1-1 crop. LRC, faithful color and Auto Tone then export to jpeg.

Here is a more realistic, but still aggressive, 2x crop. First just Faithful Color and Auto Tone. Second through Topaz NR standard auto.
