wow

crazy....what did you do in post...that looks good

CRAW into lightroom using homemade preset at import that does auto tone. It also adds 45 on sharpen 0 on denoise and 5 each on texture and clarity. It also changes tone curve to medium contrast. I then look at file and adjust anything major Adobe has done not to my liking, like add too much exposure, shadow or highlights. If I take to Topaz, I turn down sharpen to zero beforehand. I use it(DeNoise) as a plug-in thru Photoshop. After getting what I can in DeNoise, I look at file in smart sharpen in PS and adjust if it helps. Then return the tif to PS for final process.I masked the bird and adjusted shadows and highlights.Inverted mast and did the same on background I used Severe Noise mode in Denoise on this file, but usually use Normal. Low Light or AI Clear. I rarely shoot at this high a ISO, and also rarely process them. It helped there was little or no cropping on this one.

I am running the latest DPP on a Mac with Mojave, like you have. I haven't tried to open any R7 files but it does install and I use it as my only raw converter.

Now, that Mac of mine is capable of running one further level of MacOS, Catalina I think, so maybe it has something that your old Mac Pro doesn't. Are you saying that the latest DPP won't run on your machine? What version is it that won't work to convert R7 raws for you?

I can’t check what version I have on my Mac right now as my monitor died yesterday so I have no access. The new monitor should be here tomorrow. I run the penultimate version of DPP, so it supports the R6 files, but the latest version that includes the R7 I not only cannot run, I can’t install because my Mac doesn’t meet system requirements.

And yes, it’s hardware related. My Mac’s original last OS was El Capitan, but I flashed the firmware into thinking it was a newer Mac so that enabled me a few years of updates etc. But no longer. I plan to get a new Mac later this year.

I did a test of my own images (not r7) in Adobe RAW and DPP - DPP was considerably better. Smoother and retained more detail on the same image. Whoever suggested that earlier in this thread, thank you, I didn't realise the difference would be that big.

a question and a comment.

Question: The R7 has both ES and MS, I have been shooting MS but today decided to try the ES. was wondering if it is easier on the camera than the MS, less moving parts etc?
I think the R7 is rated to 200k clicks on the MS and I am sure they can be replaced. Which leads me to my comment

Comment: with the ES I see the rolling shutter even at 15 FPS, not that noticeable against foliage but it is certainly noticeable when you include something that should be square.

Whet he said below

AntonLargiader wrote in post #19403169 (external link)
Rolling shutter effect has nothing to do with shutter speed or burst rate. It's just about the read rate of the sensor. ES is simply not appropriate for panning against a geometrically distinct background. You can probably get away with it against BGs like sea, sky, or OOF foliage but hard verticals are just going to be a problem.

The shutter exposes a row of pixels, reads them, then exposes the next row. The exposure in electronic shutter is clearing the charge off the pixels, then letting the light hit the pixels for the desired exposure time before reading them. Things are moving relative to the camera during the exposure/read steps causing the artifacts that you see. You don't see it much with the mechanical shutter because the pixels can be exposed for the desired time, then read with relative leisure in the dark.

Someday, Canon will have a global electronic shutter at a reasonable price point and that will solve your problem. For now, you are learning when the manual and electronic shutters work well and sharing that with the rest of us.

there is only one explanation, this is a Canon apsc body with a nasty AA filter I have a feeling of at least 35%. but something for something (af) . :szeroki uśmiech:

Line-skipped 4K video "feature" requires heavy AA filtering.

So we have a camera for vloggers with 30 frames per second and looking for the eye of birds :kupa śmiechu:

Yes I did this a few cameras back and found the same thing, not rechecked since. The only thing is DPP picks up camera settings for NR, possibly does a bit more smoothing or NR in its pixel interpolation.

Thank you. It behaves pretty well though I am now understanding the issue with the EVF turning off while following a subject - that is annoying!

Pushed the ISO to 25600 for this one and processed with noise reduction. Certainly very useable.
