We had a road trip already planned that would have us overnighting in Ely, NV when I came across this article.

https://www.washingtonpost.com …-northern-railway-museum/ (external link)

"One of the things Mark Bassett noticed on his first visit to the Nevada Northern Railway Museum some 25 years ago was the lack of warning signs, glass cases and velvet ropes protecting the artifacts.

“There were no signs saying, ‘Don’t Go There’ or ‘Don’t Touch That,’ ” said Bassett, then just a visitor but now president and executive director of the railroad. “It was very unusual for a museum.”"

Ended up changing our timing so we could spend several hours at the museum and riding the steam train.

Shots from our steam train ride

My eyes started burning because the soot was so bad. I had to go back inside the passenger car

If you ride a coal-burning steamer in the open air observation gondola, you gotta learn to pick the cinders out of your hair, that has been my experience. There are no end to train nuts that volunteer to shovel coal into the firebox, which is real bull work.

Those are all great shots, there is something about trains that enthralls everyone from age 7 to 70.

When I saw this thread I KNEW I had to look at it. I used to watch the History Channel show called "American Restoration" where the owner of his restoration business in Las Vegas, "Rick's Restoration" (Rick Dale) would restore most anything and make it look like new. One of the customers he had came from Ely, Nevada, Nevada Northern Railway Museum!! Rick Dale restored MANY different railroad items over the years for the museum. One of the items he restored that I remember was a train signal for a street crossing.

Your pictures are wonderful!!

I especially like the maintenance shop photos. I work as a repair tech for passenger rail, so it's interesting to see how things were done back in the day.

Although today much of the troubleshooting is done with a laptop. I'll have to put a visit to this museum on my bucket list.

I would LOVE to also go there someday Frank, but I have to be real as I know that will never happen as I am 1800 miles away from Ely.

Just curious, are you any closer?

I live near Los Angeles. The museum is about 525 miles from me.

Starting from home my first stop would be Las Vegas. Then continue to the museum. I bet Nevada has a lot to see and photograph.

I retire next year, so I'm adding things to my bucket list every day.

The Pacific Northwest Railway Museum is local here in the Snoqualmie Valley in Washington. Last November, the PNRM did a swap with the Museum in Ely and sent over this 1951 Alco RSD4 diesel switcher. I watched them load it on a truck for a trip through the mountains to Nevada.

Looks like it might be the one in your second shot.

Magnificent series.
Interesting about the Monster & the Ghost.
Good to see them surviving.

Certainly barren landscape.

Thanks for sharing such a wonderful series
