Not only is there new firmware for the 5D, but also for the 30D and the 1D Mark II N.

Note the potential problem with the 5D! I hadn't heard of that one yet. If your 5D has a certain serial number, you need to bring it to a Canon service center. (I haven't checked my own 5D yet).

30D firmware 1.0.4 (external link)

We learned that some products have problems displaying Simplified Chinese or Traditional Chinese on the LCD monitor when the display language is set to these languages.

This problem can be corrected by overwriting the character data stored in the camera. So we request that users experiencing this problem overwrite the firmware referring to the following information.

5D firmware 1.0.5 (external link)

Fixes the phenomenon where the images are monochrome.

Fixes the phenomenon where the shutter cannot be released when using the EOS 5D + EF85mm F1.2L + Speedlite580EX. (*)

*: For EOS 5D units that contain 1 in the fifth digit of the body number (e.g., XXXX1XXXXX), the correction will not be reflected even if the firmware is updated to Version 1.0.5.
If you have an affected product that you would like to have fixed, please contact the nearest Canon Service Center.

1D Mark II N firmware 1.0.4 (external link)

Fixes the phenomenon where the images are monochrome.

Fixes the phenomenon where the images are overexposed when using Focusing Screen Ec-S.

So how long before someone tries to load the new 30d firmware on their 20d?

I did the upgrade on mine, but I also have one of the xxxx1xxxxx serial numbers. After things are cleared up a bit as to what they need to do to these earlier models, I'll call my nearest service center (390 miles away), and get 'er done. I'd guess they have to swap a chip or other non-programmable firmware to a later version.

Useful to know ... explains why my 30D was delayed in shipping from Hong Kong while Canon recalled and upgraded the firmware. Mine arrived with latest version.

Canon says upgrade even if your firmware says 1.0.4. It sounds like they did not update the revision number. But I do not care for this update since I do not speak/read Chinese. If I am selling it and buyer wants to use the Chinese language on it then it would be worth mentioning...
