I am headed to Big Bend National Park in March for a week. Looking for any suggestions on gear, techniques, etc related to photography for what Big Bend offers. I plan to do alot of landscapes and astro stuff but am open to anything else yall might be able to suggest. I really want to make this a productive trip on the photography side.

Thanks,

SC

I'm jealous!

I drove through western Texas last month. . Really wanted to go to Big Bend for a few days, but the preposterous gasoline prices forced me to just go straight to my destination in Arizona instead of detouring down to BB the way I wanted to. . Big Bend is one of several great experiences that high gas prices have stolen from me, and honestly I am a bit bitter about it.

I have spent some time researching Big Bend, and have several websites bookmarked that have good info about the geography and wildlife there. . I'll look through my favorites list and bookmarks and post some links that may be of interest to you.

That would be outstanding. It has been on me and my wife’s list for a while and just over the past year got my daughter really excited about camping. This trip should be a good one based off what we have planned at this point and really want to get some good captures.

Much appreciate the offer!

Another...https://www.earthtrekkers.com/3-days-in-big-bend-itinerary/ (external link). It is a 3-day itinerary but you can expand the time.

Note the comment about March being the busiest month due to favorable weather, etc.

I would also make note of sunrise and sunset times, keeping in mind the optimum times for pictures. For March 2023

Sunrise ranges from 7:18 AM to 7:43 AM (March 1st to March 31st)

Sunset ranges from 6:52 PM to 8:10 PM (March 1st to March 31st)

It will be crowded, but Big Bend is a big park. Going up to the Basin will take patience, but going for even a short hike will keep you away from crowds (unless you do the very popular hikes from the Basin). Take some time to visit Big Bend Ranch State Park. Part of it is available along Hwy 170 going towards Presidio which you will be driving any way or you will be missing an incredible drive. Take a day and drive into the state park - the road is long and unpaved but the main road is passable for a passenger car. From the end of the pavement to the ranger station is about 27 miles and you will be going slow, but you don't have to go all the way in.

You mentioned landscape and nightscape photography. Both are amazing in that part of Texas. You will almost certainly also see plenty of birds like road runners, hawks and neotropical migrants at that time of year. You will probably also see javalinas (look like pigs but are unrelated), coyotes, mule deer, maybe a bear or a mountain lion. Tons of reptiles, just keep your eyes open.

It is a great place to visit. I hope you have a great time.

Tim

Thanks for all that info. No real itinerary has been set with a few exceptions. I will keep all this in mind!
