The battery door on my 7D2 won't open normally. I can pry it open with a knife but it doesn't swing free on it's own. Spring seems to be okay. Now my R6 is starting to do it too. I've never had a bit of trouble in the past 14 years of Canon DSLR's. What could be suddenly causing this? Maybe some dirt?

Have you for some reason recently removed the door? If you have, makes sure the loop on the spring (see red circle in attached graphic) is positioned properly so that when the door is closed, the spring is partially wrapped, and thus torsion is applied to open the door.

If you have not had the door off, and taking into account you've said the spring is OK and hopefully positioned properly, then you may have a door alignment problem. Slightly loosen the three screws so slight movement between the plastic part and metal part can occur. Then close the door and then see if it opens properly. If it does slightly tighten the screws, working in a circle, until all are tight. Don't fully tighten the screws one at a time, as this may actually cause the misalignment.

A new door OEM door is about $23 including shipping on eBay but I'm guessing from you description you have an alignment issue. See https://www.ebay.com …Wt%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR8ju2JzYYA (external link)

Thanks, I did some gentle tweaking on it, didn't touch the screws and it's working for the time being. It's a pain when you're trying to change a battery in the field. What baffles me is why it happened to my 7D2 and my R6 at the same time.

I’ve often found screws to be loose. I don’t think they are as tight today because the female thread is often in polycarbonate or a magnesium alloy. As crazy as it sounds, years ago, with piston aircraft especially, screws could often loosen due to vibration. 50 years ago, a friend, also a Kodak repair tech, taught me the trick of putting clear nail polish on exposed screws. These days some people want to use Loctite but I don’t recommend it. Use the wrong product, and you can have a major problem getting that screw loose when you need to.
