Wondering if it is me seeing things. I have my new R6 and while out testing, I look through the viewfinder and the top corners look warped, as if a page from a book bent back. Just curious if anyone else is seeing that? Photos appear fine In Editing software.

Thanks,

Tom

Mine does not look like that. All four corners are sharp and normal.

The EVF shows you what the sensor is seeing. If you have a comparatively low priced lens that has not-great control of distortion, you can be seeing that lens' shortcomings on your R6, even while someone else (with a different brand/model lens on their R6) sees no issues via the EVF.
How does the EF 70-200mm lens look mounted on the R6 (with suitable mount adapter)? Its image should be pretty free of any distortion.

Interesting, I had the new RF 50mm 1.8 mounted. I didn’t try the 70-200. I will have to give that a try and see. I was planning a trip to the Photo Shop at lunch where I purchased the camera. Interesting to think the 50mm has some distortion. After all these years with the OVF, this is all new. Thank you,,,

Here is a test report
https://www.photozone.de …_eos_ff/1108-canonrf50f18 (external link)

It says the RF 50mm has a negligible amount of distortion, although the "There is always a lens that is the bottom feeder in the lineup and within the range of prime lenses, this is usually a nifty-fifty. In R-mount we are talking about the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM which is, by far, the most affordable prime lens offered by Canon at least."

Hi Wilt, Thanks. I tried tested with my 70-200 and I am seeing the same. I actually just got back from the shop. Two guys looked at it and said they couldn’t see what I was seeing. They suggested I shoot some test images with lines and see if the sensor itself is fine. I will have to do this quick as the grace period for return/exchange is 2-days away since I purchased the camera. We looked through another R6 with my 50mm & their 50mm 1.2L, very nice lens BTW, on my camera the effect was the same and on the other R6 I was still seeing it but not to the degree on my camera. It may just be my perception right now because I am getting anxious regarding the returns and that everything is as it should be on the camera. I have to be careful because everything I see now I don’t want to perceive as an issue and feeling comfortable with the camera.

When testing, look through the viewfinder and hit the Q button so you can see the camera options running vertically up and down both sides. That is where I notice the ‘distortion’ in the top left corner …

Just draw yourself a 'grid' using pencil and using a ruler to make lines parallel to each other, and do so horizontally and vertically. (Or use a graphic drawing program to make a grid that you print.) Then tape that drawing to a wall, and (hopefully) you set your camera on a tripod aimed perfectly parallel to the wall and line drawing. Set your camera distance so you have a set of lines as close to the four edges of the frame as you can (and they are still within the viewfinder limits), then shoot some shots and print them to see how parallel to the edges of the paper the lines have been captured by your sensor (and compare to what you see in the EVF).

Thanks Wilt, I have wall paper that has vertical lines, Don't ask, LOL, and took some shots and I do not see any distortion. I am going to just have to keep shooting and see if anything pops up. I do have the Canon CarePak so that's a plus. I appreciate everyone's help. Tom

So if you see no lines in a photo taken of you wallpaper, do you seem to see distortion in the EVF (which is not in the photo viewed on computer monitor)?

Correct, what I think I am seeing is a distortion in the display through the EVF. I had asked the photo shop if what I see was right off the sensor and I was told no. The sensor sends the information to the EVF which is separate hardware from the sensor. So if what everyone else isn’t seeing is an issue, it would be in the EVF hardware.

The sensor sends the information to the EVF which is separate hardware from the sensor. So if what everyone else isn’t seeing is an issue, it would be in the EVF hardware.

The sensor pixels ('sensels') are Red or Blue or Green sensitive only...it is conversion of the signals (changing eacg pixel to a single R-G-B value based upon the signals of its neighbors, via postprocessing of the sensor signals to create a JPG preview image which is sent to the EVF 60 or 120 times per second (depending upon camera design)...so you are never 'seeing the sensor' literally (you are not seeing 'RAW' data), but an interpretation by the JPG processor of what is hitting the sensor.
'Distortion' in the EVF might be a simple optical distortion caused by the optically simplistic eyepiece, and not at all a distortion of data displayed on the LED.
IF you see distorion in your EVF but another R6 belonging to someone else looks absolutely fine to YOUR eye, then something is not right with your camera.

Hi Wilt, just an update. I visited the store twice. Long of the short, I ended up exchanging the camera. The new camera EVF looks better as I would expect it to. I also noticed something else. The first camera was the last one on the shelf when I picked it up. This exchanged camera 'feels' different, i.e. more brand new and as I go through all the settings, it's almost as if they were different initially on the first one. I have found that the Camera Reset option does NOT reset the camera to factory defaults. I have had to go back in to remove custom options & Copyright information, so maybe it wasn't so new. This one, They actually brought this one from the back so, who knows. Going to be testing some sports shooting tonight. I appreciate all your help. Tom
