I've been asked by a friend to shoot her outdoor wedding in mid-Oct and I tried to tell I mostly shoot things that don't move and rarely shoot people. Well she said it's an informal wedding with only about 40 people invited. Coming from a 5D4 now I just got a R6 that I'm still getting use to. I'm planning on using my Tamron 85mm 1.8 and 45mm 1.8 since this is a 4PM affair so light might be an issue. So do you think these two lenses will do the job especially if it rains and we have to move inside (I don't have a flash) Raising the ISO doesn't seem to be a problem with the R6, btw did I tell you I really like this camera. Well any advice from you wedding shooters would be nice, thanks.

You have no wide angle AOV lens...so in a wedding/ reception setting, you may be too close to capture the entire group in the limited shooting space from which you need to stand.

  • With 45mm, at a shooting distance of 10' the FOV is scarcely 5.2' x 7.6' seen in frame...you would be cutting off bottoms of legs or top of heads and still not fitting more than about 4-5 people horizontally!
  • You would need to be 15' away with 45mm FL to capture 8' x 12' within the frame.

My experiemce with weddings is that 28mm FL provides good WA capability without you running the risk of 'induced perspective distortion' of body parts exaggerated in size by being at too-close shooting distances while shooting people.
28mm FL allows 10' shooting distance while capturing just over 8' x 12' area in the FF frame. Try to stay 10' away, no matter what FL you use, to avoid induced perspective distortion!!!

IMAGE: https://hosting.photobucket.com/albums/i63/wiltonw/Principles/whole%20frame_zpstte6h6zj.jpg?width=960&height=720&fit=bounds

Left photo, the induced perspective distortion exaggerates the size of my right hand...rightmost photo my right hand is NOT so much larger that my left hand! Same FL for all shots (FL is NOT the cause!), but a more reasonable shooting distance shows hands about the same size.
Ample-bodied women hate seeing their upper arm closest to the camera exaggerated in size, it makes them look fatter; men dislike the beer gut made larger, too. Other body parts can be similarly affected by too close shooting distance.

Otherwise, 45mm and 85mm both are probably sufficient, in both AOV and speed of fastest aperture, particularly with the high ISO capability of the digital camera.
An issue may be that things are getting somewhat dim in the sunset light, as sunset is about 6:10-6:15pm in Virginia in October. And if you try to shoot dance floor shots indoors, things get very dim on the dance floor (by planned low light). My suggestion is to get yourself some supplementary light source, either battery powered LED or a speedlight (and learn to use it before the wedding day!!!)

Great reply Wilt, thanks. I do have the Canon 16-35 f4 L. Once the ceremony is over I'll have a chance to catch my breath and get ready for the family shots. Like I said it's going to be a casual affair so it shouldn't be a lot of pressure. The couple and I will go to the venue a couple of weeks before the date and do a run thru.

One thing you can also do to help with low light, other than or in addition to ISO, is purchase a small LED light, such as a Lume Cube ( https://lumecube.com/collections/dslr-photo-video (external link)) or similar item. It mounts on the camera's hot shoe and provides a nice light to help you keep a lower ISO or a higher Shutter Speed during the reception if the light is low.
I used it in my last wedding and it did great. I didn't seem to have a problem with Red Eye either. You can adjust color temp as well as intensity.

Are you being paid for this?

If you've never shot a wedding before (even as a 2nd shooter), and you don't normally shoot people or things that move, I would first and foremost make sure the bride/groom understand they may not be happy with even a single image you deliver. The safest advice I can give you is "Don't do it." ߘ You don't realize the work involved and the pressure/pacing of shooting a wedding until you experience it, ideally as a second shooter for the first time.

If you are the only person available, meaning they would otherwise not have a photographer if you don't accept, then give it your best shot and accept no payment. You can get by with the 2 lenses you have, but a 24-70 and a speedlight is invaluable at a wedding. Renting one may be worth it to you for your own peace of mind. 16-35z 24-70, and the 85 can surely get it done. A speedlight is a must-have once you get indoors. Set it to E-TTL and take the time to rotate the flash head to bounce the light off something rather than aiming it at your subjects.

Keep us posted on the results!

Update, I will have rented a Canon RF 24-70 IS 2.8 and most likely it will cover the entire event. Also bought a lume cube panel mini.

The 24-70 will be your most used lens. It may cover the entire event. However, you really need to have a powerful flash at the ready and know how to use it. Outdoor fill-flash knowledge is a must. Weddings are fast paced events. You won't have time to fiddle with your equipment. Know it intimately, an extension of yourself. It's good that you have some time to practice. :-)

After 440 shots I was please with my first attempt to shoot a wedding. A very informal affair I shot the set up at the community club house to guess arriving to the ceremony itself (very short) and lot's of bride and groom poses afterwards plus a ton of family shots and a few sunset poses. Did not need additional lighting inside as the R6 and Canon RF 24-70 2.8 was a joy to use. All in all I had about 7 shots that were unusable.
