The pixel density is out there though. Fuji just released a 40mp crop sensor. Initial images look really good and clean.

True, Canon has had the pixel density for years, ever since the M6II was released, or earlier. The M6II/R7/90D means that back in 2019, Canon could have created an 85Mpx FF sensor if they so desired, so 3 years later, I am sure they have figured out how to add an additional 15M pixels. :)

Is that the Fuji GFX 100?

Battery life isn't an issue with that either, and again if you are careful with EVF settings, you can extend usage of batteries, just like on the Canon bodies.

Looks like a pretty awesome camera if so... :) other than the 5fps burst rate....

That's one. also, there are a couple of cell phone cameras that beat 100 MP. Samsung and Xiaomi. I think that's not the best use of 100 MP but larger sensors can benefit from more MP.

Bodies I recall that started omitting the AA filter

- 2012 Nikon D800E (external link)
- 2014 Pentax 645z (external link)
- 2015 Sony a7R II (external link)

I wouldn't be happy with those cameras with a sharp lens. They might help with soft lenses, where AA blur is all extra and unnecessary, but the idea of a very sharp lens running into unique problems because it is sharp does not sit well with me. I want a limit on aliasing.

I assume succeeding bodies continued this design decision as well as it did not adversely impact sales.

Popularity and proper sampling are two different things..

For manufacturers their key concerns are

- sales volume
- very low customer returns or complaints

An indicator of this is sales and product cycles

5Ds R just this week being labeled as "temporarily unavailable" is an indicator that the lesser AA filter is desired by end users.

May be the reason why a R5s @ 100MP may have a less aggressive AA filter or no AA filter whatsoever.

Is the 5Ds R still be manufactured? I didn’t realize that. I knew there was still stock in places but I didn’t realize it was still being manufactured.

I was thinking along the same lines of what you are inferring as well. Last I heard, I thought production was halted back in early 2020? Maybe a two birds with one stone kind of situation. Granted, I do not keep up with makes and models at a granular level.

I believe there is already a 100mpx body in the market, but probably not full frame? I don’t follow other brands very much though.

I got my guesstimate for 120-150MB file size of a 100MP image from Phase One raw files. Yep, there are 100 and 150mp Phase One's out there.

I would love more pixel density but not at any loss of ISO at this point. With marching band season, I find that I only ever have a couple of places to shoot from, but have to cover the entire field from those perspectives, and currently with a 100-400II, I am in into stratospheric ISO levels.

If there was an R body to come out to meet these rumored specs, I don't need the burst rates, but do need the ISO performance, and would love a bit more digital zoom at the same time.

I need to keep results to this, if not better, in low light late night shooting...

I wonder we'll see an actual R1 before the 2024 Olympics? Will it's monster megapickle status remove it from that cycle?

A little OT, but;

I held off on the R3 only due to it's lower pixel count. I can see really enjoying the R3, as much as i loved the old 1D bodies, but I also have really learned to love more pixels ever since 5D4 and now R5.

That said, my lack of jumping on the R3 was about that 30-45MP... never thought about 100MP

I am hoping that there might be something in between. Maybe we will see the return of the R1S alongside an R1? Seems unlikely, but a 50MP R3/R1 would be really nice.

For context people should look at the previous 1-Series rumor threads. You'd be surprised how fanciful the predictions were for the past 1-2 decades.

A simple use of the search box would yield it. ;-)a

I remember reading some rather outlandish predictions and then what was announced was in line with a very conservative traditional Japanese company.

I welcome being wrong.bw!

While it’s possible I struggle with seeing a 100mp body in a 1 series form factor body. The use cases for that kind of resolution is usually better served with the smaller form factor body, and many will have an L plate attached.

I think it is more likely to see a R5s than a R1s. What’s in a name though? :-)

The one thing I’m pretty sure about is that we will see that high resolution body, and we will see an R1. I’m just not sure they are one in the same.

You are probably right. I don't think anyone disagrees with this.
