I am wanting to learn how to use AutoStakkert software for using this software to stack a video file taking the many individual images of a video to make a better single image?

I first need to convert an MP4 file into an AVI file but I do not know what program to use to do that with. AutoStakkert works with AVI, not MP4 that my Canon 90D makes.

I am using Windows 10

Thank you

There are *many* freeware converters out there, as a quick google search reveals.
I think the trick is in figuring out which are reputable, not malware, not come-ons for paid software, and actually work as desired.

VLC Media Player does this task, and has an excellent reputation. Like most freeware it can be a little finicky to set up a conversion, here’s a guide:

ONLY get freeware from known safe web sites. For VLC, find it at the official site videolan.org:
http://www.videolan.org/ (external link)

I’m sure this isn’t the only safe and functional choice.

I already own and use VLC Media Player, but does it somehow convert the MP4 video to AVI?

Um, yes, it can. That’s why I suggested it. Please see the post above for a link to a Youtube clip covering this specific task.

Or if learning from video is not your thing, you can find it in the documentation at videolan.org.

Thank you I finally got it to convert to AVI!!

However when I then try to put it into AutoStakkert it does not work as I get an error saying it has to be a uncompressed file.

It’s going to be next week before I have access to a windows machine. so I can’t replicate this…

Try another conversion in VLC.
When you’re setting it up, click the settings button (is it a little wrench?)
For “Codec”, select “None” if it is available. That results in an uncompressed AVI.

IF uncompressed is available in VLC - it may be, or may not be, and I can’t confirm on a windows pc at the moment.

Be aware that uncompressed AVI conversions can result in some substantially large files!

Disclaimer: I’m not a user of Stakkert. I do have some experience with codecs and conversions..

I clicked on the Options button, I will show you with and without the options.
I also clicked on the Convert/Save button but that did not show any settings like "Codec" or "None"

I was able to hop on a Windows pc today, but no joy there with VLC Media Player.

Charles, the next step from the last screen capture you posted is to click “convert/save” in the lower right corner, then select “convert”.

From there I created a new profile, AVI, but in VLC this requires one to select a codec. “None” or “Uncompressed” is *not* one of the choices.

I’m sorry, it appears VLC is a dead end for this particular conversion task.

I’ve heard good things about using AVIdemux for these sorts of tasks, but I’ve never tried it:

My best advice would be to find other AutoStakkert user info online, I can’t imagine you’re the first person to have to figure this out!

I really do appreciate all the help you have been trying to give to me SA, but as you can see in the last several days no one else on this forum have tried to help me at all.

I really do thank you for trying!!!!!!!

Hi Inspeqtor,

Maybe this could also help you go the right way. There is an old video convert tool called Virtualdub which can convert .mp4 to uncompressed .AVI with a plugin.

VirtualDub can me downloaded from this website Sourceforge.net (external link). It is the official place to download this application (as can be read here: https://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/ (external link)).

Once you have downloaded Virtualdub you don't have to install it. Just place it in a folder of your liking.

Second you need to download the plugins for Virtualdub. They can be found here: codecpack.co (external link). You can download it by clicking on the link that say's: "Download: FFMpeg Input Plugin 2.0 (57.0 MB)"

Once you have downloaded this plugin you will notice that it has a "plugins32" and "plugins64" folder and the place where you have put VirtualDub has a "plugins" folder. Place the content of the "Plugins64" folder inside the "plugins" folder of VirtualDub and you are good to go.

You can open the file with CTRL+O and pressing F7 will save it into a .AVI file. I thought that this was an uncompressed AVI file since the small 1.4 MB MP4 file that I have converted now is a 4GB file(!).

If you want to have something that works more out of the box:

At the moment there is a Humble Bundle which also has Movavi Video Converter in it which gives you the option to convert video files. And some more applications that you might be interested in. For the price these bundles are usually a steal:

https://www.humblebundle.com …oolsbundle_softwarebundle (external link)

Hope that this will help.
