That is odd that they would even do this... with so much software in a camera, it isn't that difficult to conceive adding more to firmware to introduce a myriad of B&W profiles that can be selected by any existing camera. I guess I fail to see what this niche camera is going to even serve? I would rather have 10 different B&W picture styles where I can tweak settings by color channel, by shadows/highlights, etc to create custom B&W profiles to use on a shoot, so that I get OOC JPG ready to go.

I would think the target customer could be the fine art folks, (though the resolution is rather small for that) the astro folks, print documentation folks. I would think that bayer filter messes with the pixel true luminescence value.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

Not DSLR, but P&S cameras are surely dead.

I thought so too, however I ended up buying a Ricoh GRIII Street Edition a few months ago as a backup for a trip to Spain! It fits perfectly in my pant pocket and an APS-C sensor. Also, it is super fast. If I evever break it or lose it, I'd probably buy one again!

I just picked up two P/S cameras, the Lumix ZS-80 and the Canon SX70. Both are so much more portable and provide much better image quality than a phone camera and I have a pretty decent phone camera. :)

And there's something to be said about having a real button to push. A plastic slab just doesn't feel like a camera.

Yeah, that should turn things around.

I doubt it. Unless referring to 'extinct', in which case, absolutely.

Read about Leica digital monochrome. Amongst all the hyperbole that goes with any tech, it's clear that a colour sensor with it's 3 layers of pixels is not the equal of a monochrome sensor.

I walked to Leica section at camera store today. They had worn-out paint, used SL. I like flat profile of its body, minimalistic design and sensor which works well with rangefinder lenses. Got my Orion-15 on it. Slow, f6 lens.
4someting millions pixels EVF was fine, not noisy on static, but panning was just not good.

I don't care if is mirrorless or else. I don't mind tiny Ricoh GRD/GR series screens. But EVFs are just not my thing.
I wonder if same is part in X100V and X Pro 3 popularity.

At least with X100V, it's primarily an influencer thing now.
I'm an X100S owner and the hybrid finder is definitely something I like.
I don't mind EVF, I hate only having a rear LCD.

Not sure why anyone would want to go back. Bigger camera to fit the mirror assembly which pushes rear element further from the sensor. That is going backwards. No pun intended. Back to MFA? Not for me. Even with MFA the nature of a mirror assembly causes variation so you still get very slight back/front focus. Some say MFA should still be available for problem lenses. Not sure why Canon dropped it because it is only an electronic adjustment. Nothing physically moves.

I have a theory. Board of directors meeting. "If you have a problem Canon lens send it in. If you have a 3rd party you are out of luck. Get a Canon lens." :-)

Average Joes are satisficed with BW from color sensors, nor Monochrome sensors are for average Joes it seems.
I have rarely seen decent image from Monochrome users. Except very few.

And to keep this thread relevant, Pentax released Monochrome DLSR this week.

Future is: spend on manufacturing costs less, charge more. Mirrorless with EVF is cheaper than good optics for OVF.

You don't need to have brought a new DSLR to be using one...

Sales figures are a representation of the new market, not an accurate representation of the current use of DSLR's.

I have a 7D2 I brought new around 5 years ago; I also have a 5D2 I brought 2nd hand around 2 years ago.

Just because I haven't brought a new camera in 5 years, doesn't mean I am no longer using a DSLR.

How many lenses are they selling (i've brought a few in the last few years), this may be a better representation of the level of use of DSLR's...

It is a representation of companies willing to invest capital though. If everyone has purchased their DSLR and no one is buying any more, companies will stop R/D and investment leading back to the title of the thread, the product goes extinct.
