The huge new Photo Raw 2023 package is available starting Oct 10. Plugins likely to be a couple of days later. Plus members may get it early. It is huge jump in new features with all manner of AI masking features, content aware fill, AI keyword creation.....etc.

There are at least 6 folks on Youtube with betas already posting reviews. So you can definitely see what it can do. Just search on "On1Photo Raw 2023" and then filter by upload date.

Here is an "official" On1 Photo Raw run through.

https://youtu.be/YRzXKz7BgPk (external link)

Note that ALL of the nifty AI segmentation features are being performed on 8bit JPEG images and not raw files. JPEG is a final delivery file format, not a format for performing editing. Who is going to perform color and tone edits on a JPEG if the whole idea of the software is "Photo RAW"? This is the kind of thing that irks me about On1 in general. My speculative hunch is that the demo would be terribly slow if raw files, converted into temporary 16bit RGB files for editing, were used. In their defense, they appear to be full-sized (pixel dimension) JPEG files.

Enjoy!

I have zero problem editing my CR2, CR3, and ORF raw files. The only time a jpg is involved is if I select to export a jpg for social media.

So… why is the editing demo of the AI features done with JPEGs?

Ask those what did them. Also look at the demos made by Scott Davenport, Antony Morgantti and 5-6 others on YouTube.

I'm not interested in Photo Raw. Just curious why the people who make the software do not show how powerful it is.

Although it is not my primary Raw converter/processor, I have owned licenses to ON1 Photo Raw since 2018.

Every new version is loaded with a significant number of potential very useful new features. However, while many of these features look great on paper, in reality they are not terribly refined and fall a bit short. In addition, having so many features set up as separate filters usually with similar sliders creates significant software bloat. It may be easier to use that way for newbies, but it creates a lot of clutter and performance takes a hit. I hope that over future versions of this software, the interface will be simplified and streamlined.

ON1's tool implementation and image quality is still not in the same league as the best raw conversation software available,. However, it is improving significantly every year and I have no doubt it will eventually be on the same playing field as Lightroom, Capture One, and PhotoLab.

I've been using the '22 variant more and have become more comfortable. The AI is pretty good. Also been using the luminosity masks and as nice as it is, some of the control aspects I wish it could be adjusted slightly different. If there is a way it is deep in the sub menus that is challenging to find. Have not seen a YT video of it. (If I were more familiar with PS than I might be able to do it but I'm not PS competent.)

One I would like is to be able to run a script/actions when working with layers. Having to individually select-click, select-click routine uses time. Still learning though.

as far as this version I'm tempted.
