If you banned all cross posting, all the smaller threads would dry up. If you can only post one place, you're gonna put it in the place with the most traffic.

Yes, exactly.

It's bad form to put the same shot in 3 similar threads over the course of a few minutes. That gets old. Space them out a little bit. Give different smaller threads a little exposure over time.

Well, if my shot is good for World Wide Photo Week (community but less popular) and Food Trucks (specialized) and Urban Candids (more active), I don't want to post it a week apart and have to keep track of those postings. I'll make three posts on the same day. Otherwise, I agree. One difficulty is the abundance of similar threads. People keep starting them.

Pekka, is there a way to track my gallery links? If I go to my gallery, it only shows where it was posted first. It would be nice to know where else it's been. I lose track.

This, in my opinion, would be a very useful feature.

In my opinion, cross-posting out of your gallery or from links is fine if the image belongs in those threads and serves a useful purpose there. I agree it shouldn't be done excessively.

Dealing with "average images" is a separate matter!

There are bigger problems to worry about. :-)

There is a way which involves searching for the galleryimage tag.

I just wrote you a tool that helps a little in that: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/gimg.php

It shows all you gallery photos and their gallery image tag names. You can do an automated search for it with one click.

That tool is not refined (took less than 1 hour to write). There is no pagination so all your 709 gallery photos are there on one page, but if you have a clue which ones you used, that may help finding where it was used.

I really do not want to write a script that searches each member's gallery photo for the respective tags in all posts. That would be 263,000 searches for 19 million posts each. This is not THAT important and issue :)

Maybe I'll write some code that stores new posts galleryimage tag usage, like the next version will store quote usage.

Thanks much. Works good. I actually like that 1-page version. Easier to see than gallery page.

Agreed! It’s much easier and quicker to find a particular image. I think it’s great.

Re the existing rule quoted here;

"Do not post the same image in multiple forums or in multiple posts. The end result will most likely be one of the threads being deleted by a moderator."

That rule, though less clear now, was written long before POTN became filled with the "post your xyz images here" threads, which are now the bulk of all posts on the forum.

If you read closely though, as I said, it's not so clear. It was meant to prohibit posting multiple new threads started in multiple forums with the same images. The hint being "the end result will most likely be one of the threads being deleted "

It was never meant to prevent sample images from being posted in eg: lens thread, body thread, or subject thread, largely because at the time that sort of thread was not even remotely common on the forum. Times have changed, when this was written, the vast majority of image threads and traffic were begun with a members new thread of their images/adventure. These threads still exist, but they quickly disappear below the these newer public invitation to post threads.

I don't say any of this to dismiss the complaint, it is a valid one. One image does not need to be, and should not be posted in, the 100-400mm thread, the 7D2 thread, the birds pooping thread, and experimental, etc. I definitely empathize with any members sense of order and impulse control.

On the other hand, if this sort of posting is what now makes up the bulk of the forums traffic, if we do re-write the rules to exclude it specifically, and then start to crack down on it, what effect will that have on the forum membership and participation? What a shame to potentially chase off some of our most prolific members, who are decent people, over this.

well said,

I personally do not see that this is a widespread problem, only that a human eye is very good of detecting duplicates and it may annoy somewhat.

Merely as an interested coder, I'm planning now to build a script which parses x amount of posts (like 25,000 latest) and makes statistics of duplicate IMG tags and who they belong to (users, threads, forums). Then we will actually know factually how many do this and how much. I can run this in my dev system and report findings back when and if it is done.

I coded some statistics stuff.

SEARCHING 50,000 LATEST POSTS FOR IMG TAGS IN FORUM 91 (Birds in photo sharing)
40,809 UNIQUE IMG URLS FOUND IN THOSE POSTS.

1726 crossposted image URLs found.
members who has done it: 146 (I know their names :))
URL was crossposted once: 1622
URL was crossposted twice: 95
URL was crossposted three times: 4
URL was crossposted four times: 5

This does not take into account what kind of images they are. Some may post emoticons many times and so on. Crossposting image only once seems to be the most common M.O.
IMG inside quotes we not counted.

Speaking of searching
There's a filmstar dog named Kenzie
I reckon she'd get the award for most likes.
I tried but my searching went array.

How to decide and where to stop? I just now processed an image from 2015 and posted it to The Color Orange and to Gaggles, Flocks, and Murders. It could also fit in Favorite Tree and Wires and Seed Pods (there's fruit in it); I resisted those temptations. The image will probably return from retirement to join A-Z or Colors, for instance, in the Competitions forum after aging for a decent interval. It's not so wonderful as to be gallery material, esp. since it'd land on the first gallery page, which people look at more. Not easy decisions.

Is there an ACP "Anonymous CrossPosters"?

- "Hi, I'm Pekka and I have been crossposting"
- "Hi Pekka!"
