Have a look at this link for lens date codes:
http://www.the-digital-picture.com …ses/Canon-Lens-Aging.aspx (external link)

doesn't really seem worth the hassle to me - you have no idea what has happened to a lens before it arrives in the shop anyway.

Canon 6D
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 , Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro
CanonEF 17-40 f/4 L Canon EF 24-70 f/4 IS L and 70-200 f/4 L :D
Speedlite 580EX and some bags'n pods'n stuff

That's really great but Only one lens I have fits that coding system!
e.g. my 17-40 is serial no is, 273549, unless I have been looking at thr wrong numbers ( not unlikely!)

The date code is not the serial number. On most EF lenses, the date code is on the surround of the rear element, only visible if you take the rear cap off the lens.

yeah that's exactly where I was looking!
Only the 70-200 zoom has the 'date' code there - the others (17-40, 5mm, 85mm) just have numbers there

thanks for the replies guys...hope the 17-40 does have a date code??..the 17-40 lens is pretty hard to source here at moment, most of the places are waiting for canon to deliver to the uk, and have a backlog of customers waiting (well thats what they tell me),thats why i,m wondering if this lens is ok or if it is a 'return' and need to find out wether its an old lens or why it has been returned? hopefully if it is a return it didnt suit the photographers needs as opposed to bad focus etc, anyway im off to try it and to make sure that they have a 'no quibble' returns policy.wish me luck ..been lookin for this lens for 3 months now.

The date code is actually really hard to see, you need a good bright light and careful angling to pick it up.
and it's possible it may not appear on every lens.
