Dear Board,

I own an EOS 1DX and EOS1D111 and 1DIV cameras.

They use different batteries, LP-E4N and LP-E4, but the batteries fit all cameras and depending on the camera they are installed in are recognized.

The LC-E4N charges both batteries.

My question is does the LC-E4 charge both batteries as well? I have two LC-E4's and I don't want to pack the wrong charger when I go on a trip.

Regards,

Tim Murphy

Generally, when Canon launches cameras with a 'new' version battery, the new battery merely has more electrical capacity (milliAmp-hours), and older chargers will charge newer batteries...it merely takes a bit longer, due to greater amount of electricity that has to go into the battery.

Read the 2nd last post for a summary.

Actually read the whole thing. Canon does not provide complete information......

My general rule is to use the newest charger. I have had that experience going from a 1DIV to 1DX and 5DIV to R6 and it has worked for me.

Dear Choderboy,

I guess I have two LC-E4 chargers that I have no reason to keep.

The LC-E4N definitely charges the newer battery in the 1DX as well as the older batteries for the 1DIII and 1DIV because I got around to trying it. But the 1DX needs the newer LP-E4N, it won't recognize the LP-E4 batteries even though they fit perfectly. At this point I don't see ever needing to bother with the alternate LP-19 batteries and charger for the 1DX since I have plenty of compatible LP-E4N batteries.

So, there you have it, clear as mud!

Well that's weird.

I have a 1DX.
LP-E4 Canon original works
LP-E4 Master Instruments replacement works after clicking OK to "Can't Communicate With Battery" message.
LP-E4n Canon original works (of course)
LP-E19 Canon original works

I also have 1DXII.
LP-E4 Canon original works
LP-E4 Master Instruments replacement does not work. Get message "shutting off for your safety"
LP-E4n Canon original works
LP-E19 Canon original works (of course)

You really don't want to bother with LP-E19 unless you get LC-E19 charger as it can't be charged in the old chargers.

I'd say there are two reasons to keep the LC-E4 chargers:
Backup in case your LC-E4n charger fails.
Charging multiple batteries. It won't charge LP-E4n to 100% but you can get them most of the way there then top up in LC-E4n.

Dear Dave,

I actually checked again and while I get the message that a third-party LP-E4 cannot communicate with the 1DX it does power the camera and allow it shoot. I guess I was reluctant to go past the communication issue when it first appeared.

The R3 also uses the LP-E19 battery. It works with the LP-E4N as well. I don't have any LP-E4 to try with.
