On Nov 6,7 I'm going to B&H's Optic West in Monterrey (Maureen Sousa's backyard). They will be hosting a whale watching tour and it's my first time doing so. I was wondering if you had any tips on gear or otherwise. I have a Canon 7D II and 5D IV.

Ed
Canon 5D IV, 7D II, T2i, Tamron 150-600mm G2, EF 100mm 2.8 L, EF 24-70mm 2.8L II, EF 24-105mm 4 L II, EF 50mm 1.4 IS, 630 EX, etc.

What lenses do you have now?
300 to 600 mm focal length isn't a bad thing to take.

Edit: See some of the gear used in this thread:

My signature has most of my lenses. I was thinking about taking both cameras. The 7D with the 150-600 and the 5D with the 24-105.

I missed the signature
I'd do as you mentioned. Set for close or distant encounters. If you come from San Francisco, there's some nice landscape/sea images. Don't leave anything in your car if you get out for pictures, or put it in the trunk before leaving for your next destination. Some years ago, I needed to rent an SUV to move some equipment from one lab to another and someone did a smash & grab in the time it took to use a urinal.

People are sick. I just came from a trip to New Orleans for a work trip. I took my camera, but decided to leave it in the room. There was lots of low life around. The French Quarter is in the 'downtown' district. Couldn't hardly walk down the sidewalk without gagging on cigarette and marijuana smoke. You certainly have to be alert.

I'll second this advice. Bay Area papers report copiously on thefts of photographic equipment, including armed robberies at outdoor shoots where, for example, rappers are making videos. Don't leave anything visible in your car, photographic or not, even if it doesn't look valuable, like a bag whose contents don't show. When shooting, it's best to have a companion watch to the rear and sides because your eyes will be on the camera or the subject. Twin Peaks has repeatedly been a crime scene.

I agree, I'm not coming from SF though. I'll be coming over the Pachecho pass. Hopefully, it's not as bad in Monterey.

My problem occurred near Santa Cruz, but the advice holds for nearly any large city, or any place popular with tourists which incudes Monterey.

If you are buying travel tickets, make sure you spell it with one r, or else you might end up in the middle of Mexico! :p

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

True, Monterey has its share of homeless people.
