running LR 5.7.1 (my wife and daughter have the 2 licenses on the LR 6 i bought).

PC with 16g of RAM on Windows 10 64-bit (home i think) but regardless

i dont have a new enough version of LR available for me to use my 5d4. i CAN however use my 5d3. it has the micro-B and (i think) the micro-hdmi ports.

i was playing around with it just a bit ago using the USB connections (never shot tethered until now) and thought there seemed to be quite the lag time between shooting an image and it popping up in LR. would running it on an hdmi cable increase transfer speeds? if not, i suppose ill just use the USB-A to Micro-B (the funky more square shaped) cable. so THAT begs this question. does the Tether-Tools 90o cable, plug in so that the cable hangs DOWN or does the orientation on their plug, cause the cable to turn 90o UP? does anyone know?

its not really a deal breaker because i could always secure it to my strap lugs anyway or use a cheaper cable that comes out straight.

i really need to refocus (no pun intended) my efforts and ideas to something other than what im doing now, if i ever expect to get out of the 'not making any money, shooting on spec, and for cheap bastards who dont see me as a professional trying to make a living' rut that i seem to be in...

Two questions there. I don't know what you're considering "quite the lag time," but using various tethering software, cables, et cetera, I've never gotten the lag down to less than three seconds.

I lost a 5DII main board to a yanked cable years ago, so I've very cautious about that these days. I use several of these devices to lock the cables to the tripods that my cameras and computers are mounted to (in some cases I've tapped additional 1/4-20 threads in tripod heads). Tethertools makes something similar that I think they charge $90 for. but I prefer this one at only $10.

seems if i recall it was a second or two. ive seen some set-ups where its almost instantaneously. i saw that Tethertools has an anchor of some sort for securing the tether to the strap lugs but those look pretty good too...

Tethering only works via USB as far as I know. The HDMI output is basically an output of the LCD display and/or for video recording.

When I tether it is normal for it to take a second or two for the photo to appear in Lightroom. A faster computer may transfer and process the photo quicker. I apply a preset as the photo comes into Lightroom which also may add to the time it takes.

It also slows down if one is saving to both card in the camera and to the computer...which I always do.

What protocol is being used for the PC USB port? USB 1.0, 2.0…?

I've been using 3.1, being careful to maintain that protocol with all elements in the link.

According to specs I find the 5DIV is USB 3.0. I usually go with just a cable between the camera and laptop.

You do have to make sure all components in the chain are rated for at least USB 3.0, including the cable. It's only as fast as the slowest element.

Look for blue insulators in USB-type A connectors. All USB 3.0 Type A connectors are supposed to use blue insulators in the connectors.
