Spent the afternoon with this camera and mostly my RF 800 f11 STM. At a wildlife refuge and a wetlands. I am liking the camera so far.

This GBH caught this pleco cat (armored with spines, an invasive species common in S Fl waterways) and stabbed and banged it up repeatedly until he could swallow those awful spines. He did it though. I watched this whole episode from across a canal.

Thank you!

I agree with all that you said. I had the 1D Mark III for most of my shooting over about 10 years and it was a beastly thing to carry around. In some ways it was good because you could get respect with it (many people thought I was with the local papers) back when owning such any DSLR was still rare. On the other hand, trying to get anything stealthily was almost impossible unless you have a long lens (but that has its own problems).
The biggest problem was having to to put the camera up to your eye, compose, move your AF point, then snap. I also generally wear hats/caps so I would have to reverse the brim. Now with mirrorless I can do most of my shooting from the back LCD and just get a general composition and click.

Interesting about the 45MP downsampling. For me that 30MP of the 5DIV (and R) were absolutely the sweet spot. 24MP, especially with more accurate AF and a good lens for me can match up great when upscaled to 30MP when needed (or even larger with the Enhance feature in LR/Adobe Camera Raw). It's weird though how strongly numbers and marketing can affect your thinking though. When I downloaded the R/R5/R6 raws from James Reader's comparison and upscaled and saw almost no difference between the 3 cams, I knew that extra $2000 cdn on the R5 would make little to no difference in the real world. But still it's nice to "future proof" with higher MP if for nothing else except re-sale since most people don't realize that there are diminishing returns on MP and that MP don't matter much anymore.

I shot with both a 5DIV and a 6D in tandem for years (as well as a 7DII). For some reason the 20 mp of the 6D was never an issue. I have made prints of some of these images. The biggest drawback of the 6D was the AF system, its best feature was low light performance. Also the files were beautiful SOOC. Now I shoot with an R5 and this R6II. We will see if the smaller file size is an issue.

I hear that people like the 6D files. I have a friend who has the 6D II and the R3 and he prefers the 6D II (and he's having AF issues with the R3, multiple copies and lenses).
That's how I feel about the 5D IV. Also, when I had the 1D III and a great copy of the 70-200 II (which I sold ugh) the colours and "bite" of the images was great (5D IV was the best IQ I've ever had).

I know a lot of people talk about colours from cameras but they use Adobe software (LR or PS/ACR) to process the raw files not realizing that it's Adobe that is responsible for the colour output, much more than the sensor. Would love to see comparisons of the 6D vs say the R5/R6 II using Canon software, or jpg or even custom calibrating Adobe with a passport colour checker.

I know Irene Rudnyk did a comparison of the EOS R, RP, R6 and R5. Her fav colours were the R5 and RP (6D II sensor apparently) surprisingly . The R6 came out warm (3rd place) and the R was dead last with green skin tones. I had the R and 5D IV and did not find the IQ to be the same despite having the same sensor . More noise, and banding and seemingly diff colours on the R. The R6 seems so much better.

And yeah, that AF. While the 5D IV IQ was amazing, trying to nail shots was frustrating, esp with Sigma Art lenses (which are flawless on mirrorless).

Wow that's a crazy experience to have seen first hand! It's like "unnatural nature" at its finest.

This is not the first time. There are a lot of plecos and other armored cats in Florida waters (all non-native) and the herons eat them all the time, which amazes me as they have these awful spiny fins that are really painful. I used to keep them in aquaria when I was young and remember too well being nailed by those spiny fins many times.......how do they swallow them????? I've seen them eat these things multiple times and am always in awe of what unbelievable eating machines herons and egrets are.

Thanks for the comments. I don't know what it was about the 6D but the files were great. I always called it magic dust. The 5DIV files were great, too. Some days I miss both of them!!

I like my mirrorless bodies though. And the R6II files seem to be pretty nice and the AF hit percentage is crazy high, so far anyway.

The files you guys are posting look great. I asked if it was me on the R7 thread because a lot of what I am seeing look flat. These R62 files pop well

Sunrise. This is what I saw on the camera's LCD as well as what I saw when imported to Lightroom.

Just for fun, I pulled up the shadows to see what would happen. I was shocked at how much detail there was!

That is amazing!

Alex makes great videos. The R6 II outperformed both the XT5 and A7IV in dynamic range and ISO noise, and even seemed to have more detail despite having the lowest advertised resolution.

You all know that the R6II is in the Gear Database now, right?

See here: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/gearindex.php?id=3901

Pekka added a lot of gear, which is great, even though all Canon’s mirrorless cameras are listed in the DSLR category :-D (not to worry, I’m sure that will be corrected).

On my R6 I use back button focus with the AF-On button set for single point focus and the * button set for eye detect focus. I have my R6II set up the same way but when I use single point focus I get a larger box bouncing around the frame. I'm not sure what it is there for. I called Canon and the guy there didn't know and was reading the manual as we were talking.

The things I'd like to know is: 1) what it the extra larger box trying to tell me and is it valuable information 2) can I turn it off assuming it is not valuable information 3) is the camera still focusing on the single point I chose or the larger (zone) box?

I was at a wrestling meet yesterday using single point mostly, sometimes using eye AF, but the other box was dancing around the entire time in single point.

Anyone else noticed this behavior and understand why it is happening.

The * button set for eye focus works as it did on the R6.

I have noticed the dancing focus box too and wonder what it is about. Maybe somebody will figure it out.

Is that the AF Preview? I have mine on when I’m in my normal AF mode which is in the whole area and Face/Eye AF. Starts tracking and eye or face without pressing any buttons. I’ve seen videos where it is active even in single point and spot AF but I never use that as my main focusing set up.

The BBF Detail Sets are more complex and it showed up there when in single point. I programmed it so it does not appear and the AF point does not move around. I just want the single point to stay put.

I’ve seen the double lined box come up when you press the joystick but I forgot what it does. I never use it but I think it does the same thing.

I don't know what it is but will check the AF preview. When in single point the single point stays put but the other box moves around at the same time sometimes. It freaks me out as I don't know what it is doing.

I just received mine and I feel like I need to watch some videos on how to take advantage of the focus system. I'm so used to my older bodies using center point ( focus re-compose ) I also need to customize things a bit. On my R and 7d2 I set buttons to switch between AI servo and 1 shot. But so far the eye focus seems really nice and accurate.

I also need to get an RRS Plate, does anyone know if the R6 plate is the same? I don't see one for the Mark 2.
