I don't know what it is but will check the AF preview. When in single point the single point stays put but the other box moves around at the same time sometimes. It freaks me out as I don't know what it is doing.

I think that is it. I seen that in a few videos. I'll see if I can find it when I get back.

Thanks. I haven't had time to really dig into the issue so would appreciate being pointed in the right direction!!!

I just received mine and I feel like I need to watch some videos on how to take advantage of the focus system. I'm so used to my older bodies using center point ( focus re-compose ) I also need to customize things a bit. On my R and 7d2 I set buttons to switch between AI servo and 1 shot. But so far the eye focus seems really nice and accurate.

I also need to get an RRS Plate, does anyone know if the R6 plate is the same? I don't see one for the Mark 2.

It is definitely more complicated and takes some time to get it right. I have had an R5 for a while now and still sometimes think I could improve the AF settings. Ron @ Whistling Wings Photography has some great YT videos on setting up the R5 and R3 AF systems for birds (I have been a client of Ron's for years and have been out shooting with him many times including occasionally with some other POTN members-he is the real deal).

His videos are at least a starting point- the R6II has some new settings and names that are not the same as the R5 so I am finding a learning curve that I didn't expect!!

Thanks, I'll check his videos out. I'm so used to just using 1 point, even on my 7D2 that this is like a whole new world. I just have to spend some time with the camera. I've already found a few little things that I really like with the dials ( so much better than the R )

I thought this was a nice way to set up the camera

I have this on one of my custom functions as well as the depth of field preview button switching between AI Servo and 1 shot.

Yes the BBF Detail Sets have more options. I just went through his R7 video that I posted on that thread. The buttons may be different but the system is closer the R3 and R6 II.

Not sure if this is what you are seeing. At 19:55 it starts. At 19:58 he is using Expansion AF but you can see the white AF Preview square in there. At 20:16 the AF Preview is pretty big but in the head. He is using Expansion again to get the AF point back in his subject but it look likes the AF Preview got there first. A cool feature but when I set it up both the Single point and AF Preview were moving around. I prefer the single point fixed and I move the camera to land on my subject. Once that happens I release the BBF and the eye snaps in.

For me I have single point activated and I have AF Preview turned off.
But still sometimes when I am shooting I will see another box appear (grey I think? But I will have to try to get it to show again).
Next time this happens I will have to see if I can grab a pic of the LCD with my phone perhaps. I've looked through the manual but can't really nail this down.
I suspect maybe it's the subject detect system kicking in? Perhaps you need to disable it completely to prevent this?

One time I was taking a test shot in my kitchen and had the spot on one thing, but then the box appeared over a faucet (maybe thinking it was an eye?)

I went over to take a close up pic in my fridge of a soy sauce bottle (exciting!) and the box appeared to the up/left of the bottle and it focused on a box of chocolates instead.

Will see if I can get this to happen again.

That looks like motion blur but at 1/3200s I wouldn't expect that. You were using electronic shutter?

I just went through the entire AF section of the manual and couldn't find info about the 2nd AF box appearing.
I did find this video where this shows up at around the 11 to 12 minute mark. Though, I think he's using servo and I think the Whole Area Tracking AF becomes active for AF when you do that by default (which I disabled). I get this using One Shot AF too though.

He has the point AF enabled, but then I can see the boxes around the screen (meaning whole area AF) and the boxes also appear around the heads of the animals.

Hard to tell. Those small birds are fast flappers. Since the head is in focus it makes it look like action so I like it.

When you select a subject to detect (animals, people, vehicles etc.) or set it to AUTO, the AF will look for those subjects to track, regardless. If you want to limit the AF to your specified AF area you need to set Subjects to Detect to NONE. And also have the Whole Area Tracking Servo AF turned off.

Here’s a video that explains it in more detail and shows it in action.

I think that what you are describing is what I am seeing. It happens when I use fixed point AF. (I have bbf set one button for eye detect and one separate button for fixed focus so I can switch quickly when needed)
