My biggest concern is, in sports as 'crowded' as basketball, hockey, football, how to ensure the auto-detect pics up on the person I want. I'm sure, in the end, it's very similar to how I try to put the focus point on a player with my 5D3. It's just going to be different enough to require a little learning / retraining.

On cameras with the newer AF system (R3, R7, R6II) you can customize the size/shape of 3 AF areas and set a button (eg MFn) to scroll through those AF areas. I think this will work really well for hockey which I have some experience shooting.

Just to understand do you mean selecting the 1, 2 and 3 options only, or you can customize the size and shape of each one of those?

I'm pretty you meant to change to the different AF modes only. I've never see a way to change their shape for zone AF. Just the 3 choices.

Thanks for that. It is a better use for the MFn. One thing I miss on both of my R6II and R7 is that I could use it to change C1-3. I mapped MFn for Drive mode but I'm already changing them automatically using C1-3. I just added Drive mode to the Green menus.

I had read that eye AF worked in the other AF modes than whole area. I wondered how Jared Polin was using expansion AF and the white pre-focus square (AF Preview) would be active within the centre square. I was going to get around to exploring that and today is a good a day as any. Pretty easy set up.

That will be handy. Several perched birds and you can use Single or Spot with Eye AF. Like you said good for hockey using square or vertical zone to isolate players. BIF will be great with the horizontal zone. I removed a few I won't use in the Limit AF areas.

What I l really like is it did no effect my BBF pre-focus technique settings. I still have AF-ON set for single point, * for zone and AF point selector set to spot and they do just that job for me. No eye AF. Those just get the subject in focus if the camera can't.

Using this camera for hockey today was just an insanely perfect experience (paired with the EF 70-200 2.8 III).
It just doesn't miss.

You know how you just know something will be very good. For the limited use so far with R6II I could just tell it is going to be excellent. Files are so clean. I have no concerns heading into some heavy shooting next month. The R7 will be a little more work.

Correct..... shape of the 3 flexible zones can be modified. Subject tracking is then an independent choice via the menu.

Where is the menu to modify them?

In the Advanced User Guide page 480 notes that size and shape modifications are possible. There is link in the note to page 554 where the modification method is shown.

I posted a gallery of images from the hockey scrimmage. Considering these were shot thru dirty plexi and this is a practice facility, they came out really clean and super sharp (almost doesnt make sense how sharp they are considering how plexi is not crystal clear).

If you click on them you can get a bigger 6MP image.

My settings were ISO 3200 (though in editing I bumped exposure by .5-1 stop for pop, so essentially ISO 4000 to 6400, no noise reduction was used), F2.8, 1/1250s using the Canon EF 70-200 2.8 III

I used to try with my 1D III but the results were so-so as the AF wasn't nearly this good, the ISO wasn't this good, and also the lighting and glass has improved a lot over the years. I also had a very mediocre copy of the 70-200 2.8 II at that time (never contrasty and rarely more than medium sharpness).

I remember getting at least 1 stop expsosure difference from place to place and the colour would change too from the strobing effects. I think they were fluorescent? Now with LED it's just perfectly even lighting everywhere and colour is also 100% consistent. I was shooting at 3900K.

I kind of thought they would go for more of a daylight balanced lighting around 5000K but honestly it looks almost that white as it is.

Coming from a 5D IV and 1D III, the R6 II feels like a huuuuuge advancement. For AF the 5D IV was very mediocre at best (the 1D III was better) and the R6 II is just miles ahead of both.
I would just use the area AF zones, then move them around to the person you want and that will tell the camera which person/face/eye to detect. It's just so fast and easy now it feels like cheating.
What lenses will you be using?
Btw, I use the EF 70-200 2.8 III and the combo is just unreal for speed and accuracy (many reviews I've seen say it's neck and neck with the RF version but the EF has a much nicer to use zoom ring position and zoom throw and costs $1300 less here in Canada)

Thanks for the feedback.

I've rented the RF 70-200 f/4L IS, but I also own the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS MkI (old school)

The fact you can get by with ISO 3200 at 1/1250 in a practice facility is amazing!

The transition to LED lights in gyms and arenas has been HUGELY beneficial!

Absolutely! I was going in fully prepared to shoot ISO 12800 because this camera is just so bloody clean! Most of the places I shot at years' past were dungeons. This place opened in late 2019 and is top tier for training facilities in Canada... I doubt you get much brighter in NHL rinks.
