RayinAlaska Senior Member More info | Oct 05, 2023 23:05 | #1102 digital paradise wrote in post #19549887 It as well written with lots of detail. Personally I didn't get a lot out of it because I was looking for answers to a specific item and she covered it. One thing she mentioned that I agree with. I know people like to shoot using Spot focus full time and if that works then great. You can't argue with success. I got a sense that others use it because a video said they should thinking the result will get sharper images over Single Point AF. I always thought a bigger AF point would cover more subject area this more contrast to work with. If your subject is further away and single point is larger and catching the background then yes Spot would work great there. If I was shooting a sphere close up l and wanted to get a particular part of the curvature then I'd use Spot. I primarily use it for small birds in thick foliage when the camera can't find them. It's mapped to a BBF for Eye Detect overdid but my least used mode. Rudy Winston first. I like this title on page 2 - “Precise” is not the same as “accurate!” https://web.archive.org …ticles/2014/spot_AF.shtml From Nina's R5 eBook on page 244. This very naturally brings about a change in how we’re using this way of focusing. Traditionally this may have been used for very precise focusing with portraits where you’re shooting with a wide aperture lens and it’s critical to focus on the eye and it was also used a lot for wildlife where you need to get through small gaps in foliage or reeds to focus on the subject. Photographers often assume that smaller AF areas have to be better, the thing to remember is that all focusing systems need contrast better known as detail to focus upon. So the smaller the area we choose to use, the harder it can be for the camera to focus. Generally speaking, the slightly larger focusing areas are the ones that will focus the best. Of course, the advances being made in the Face Detection + Tracking AF method, coupled together with the Subject to detect options are going to change the amount that we need to use this smaller focusing method. If the camera is finding the eye by itself, we no longer need to use a single focusing point to lock onto the eye.

I've never really cared who uses what as long as it works. I only mentioned it because of a few videos I had seen. I'd ask but why use Spot focus all of the time over Single point? It is never explained. Image Editing OK

I'd ask but why use Spot focus all of the time over Single point? It is never explained. Unless I need precision I want as much coverage to access as much contrast I can give the system. These days I used either Single point or Zone AF for the Eye Detect override. If Eye Detect fails to find my desired subject I use one of those two modes. Heck even Zone AF works fine on a static subject. As long it is on reasonable focus when you go back to Eye Detect the eye will snap in. These days I'm using Eye Detect 100% of the time with my R6II and R7. I also did that with my R5. Of course if I'm shooting planes, etc I make adjustments. I think it made good sense, I actually switched to single point and seeing how It goes.. My site Frenchfx.com |

PinholeR5 Goldmember More info | Oct 07, 2023 23:21 | #1108 0 sec. ago | #5733 I am positively impressed by them! I have tried to use the in-camera charging option, but it is not very convenient: I can only charge when the camera is in the hotel. The SmallRig batteries allow me to leave one (or more) charging in the hotel while I am out and about taking pictures. It is much better than simply charging in-camera. Of course, I can use the original (or third-party) chargers for the batteries, but that is just one more thing to carry around. The batteries themselves seem to work fine in the R5 (and R7, R6 II) and so far I am very happy.
