I don't mind helmets. I am enjoying learning how to better photograph basketball and using 2 bodies and lenses. having the 1dx paired with the 300mm to shoot the other end of the court and get some defensive stances and not having to crop away half the image is fun.

A quick flurry of basketball before the pause for Christmas break.

Pause for Christmas break? I think we have games tomorrow night and then practice for the three day tournament that the week after Christmas. I'll shoot 8 games a day for 3 days for that one.

There will be games tomorrow night. The boys will be playing in the Tulsa Tournament of Champions after Christmas but that will be optional, only go if I want to.

Yeah, we have one tonight too. Not sure if I am going or not. I have college basketball tomorrow afternoon shooting for the school.

Two more and then photo silence from me. I have a tournament next week 24 games in 3 days and that will be it for the year.

3 day tournament to end 2022. I love when you can get a couple of keepers on one layup.

I ended up shooting one game over Christmas break. It was the first time I’ve shot in a “major” arena. I used my wide lens (24-70/2.8) more than I have in a while.

Bhall, not sure if you are wanting this but I honestly want to help others. If I may, why did you pick these two photos to post?

As I look at the first one the shooter is not the focus, it is the kid standing behind him that is obstructed.
And on the second the defender (and his backside) are in focus instead of the guy with the ball.

I see that you are shooting these with an RP and a kit lens from the stands. Nothing wrong with that setup as long as you understand its limitations.
Looking at the settings you used, the shutter speed and the ISO on both images are way too low.

For me, I very seldom shoot at anything slower than 1/1000 shutter speed and my ISO is typically in the 4000-12800 range depending on the venue. With your lens, you are handicapped by the variable aperture so it is what it is.
