I live at ground zero and seeing the destruction is an everyday thing. As a photographer I want to document the event, but as a resident I want to forget. My neighbors tell me to document the event for the future. I’d like to hear what other photographer think.

Thanks Jon

Jon I can't imagine the devastation and misery but can appreciate in times ahead I'd wish I'd taken a few, many, at least some photos to look back on in better times.
Even if you just take and store you will not have the memories and the regret for not taking the camera out.

I could also imagine some would see such in poor light (taste) and discreetly might be the operative word.

Not sure if that helps.

We were just talking about the flood affected here and those caught up in repeated flood events. Must be extremely heart breaking to endure these natural disasters

Trust you can all stay focused and positive looking to a brighter future.

Fifty years ago a tropical cyclone destroyed the town I live in and many people died (I wasn't living here then). It has since been rebuilt but many people who were here and experienced it first hand are still traumatised by the experience. There were many, now iconic, photos taken of the aftermath of that cyclone and they serve as a very potent reminder to the many new arrivals in this town who don't understand the incredibly dangerous and destructive potential of tropical cyclones, and who may otherwise be blasé about preparing for them. I reckon you should document what you see.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

My opinion is that I would document what I see and keep it for later, for potential history.
