I just purchased this used, and while the overall condition and image quality are okay, the auto focus motor is very noisy. It's not affecting the operation of the lens, and I don't shoot video so that's not an issue, but it's still very annoying. Is there anything that can be done about this, or am I just going to have to learn to live with it? A newer macro lens, like the 100mm, just isn't in the budget right now.

It is what it is. They are noisy little lenses, but probably the sharpest of all the Canon 50s.
