Some images I took earlier this year while testing out a new solar telescope.
To make the prominences visible like this I had to completely over-expose the surface of the sun. Doing this gives great prominence detail but the sun is just a white blob, so to make the prominences easier to see in the image I turned all pixels which were pure white into pure black instead.

This second image is a dual exposure - one exposure taken to show the prominences around the edge, and another to show the surface of the sun. When blended you get the full disc as well as the detail around the edge.

That's a great method to show the prominences, and there were many in your image. The other method is to view in-person as a solar eclipse, which is far more fun. We're getting closer to a solar maximum where the Sun is more active.

Thanks David, and I realise I'm calling them flares and not their correct name of prominences - I've edited the post.
Yes hopefully we'll see a total solar eclipse here in Australia early next year, it's a 13 hour drive to get there but it's definitely a bucket list item for me. Hoping for no clouds!

Awesome images. I really do love the fake total eclipse look!
