I just downloaded Luminar AI. Thanks for the heads up.

Are there any Luminar users out there who'd care to talk about their workflow? Are you using Luminar products as your primary editing tools, or as augmentation in a suite of software?

About a year or so ago, I accepted an offer for a free copy of Luminar 4. I installed it, played with it for about an hour, closed it and didn't open it again until today. (I installed the proffered update while I was in there.) I mainly opened it to check if it's different from the link above. It is.

Luminar AI and Luminar 4 are different products. AI is not an update of 4.

Luminar 4 seems to be a direct LRC competitor with cataloging and file management along with Camera Raw functionality, plus special proprietary AI editing functionality. But my entire portfolio lives in an LRC catalog, and I'm not going to mess with that to get easier sky replacement. So I wasn't interested in Luminar 4.

With Luminar AI, they stripped out a bunch of the cataloging features and shipped it with LRC and Photoshop plugins. Now it looks more like Topaz than Adobe. I have Topaz in my workflow. I could see using Luminar AI like that. Work the raw file in LRC until it's right, then move a copy to AI for specific final adjustments, like I do with Topaz.

Anybody else have any insights on Luminar, either veterans or first impressionists?

Friday, First stab.

This is the original shot made at 3:37 in the afternoon in July. At this latitude, we've got another 5, 6 hours of daylight. Sun is still high in a hazy and cloudless sky. I took it as far as I know how in LRC and gave up. Yeah, no.

I think about post when I'm shooting. I know the sky's there, I just gotta get it on the histogram, then I can own it in post. But sometimes I can't pull it off at all. Not here, not now. That's this first shot.

I ran it through Luminar AI. Replaced the sky, added sunrays and 25% of something called, Mystical. Looks pretty good, I think, but I'd never claim it as a photograph I made. On my first try, I changed the weather, the time of day and the light itself. I wasn't there that day.

On the other hand, I can see myself thinking, "if I cranked up the Mystical a little bit..." Where's the line?

If there is a line, it doesn't have a slider in Luminar AI. It's danerously easy to use but you have to keep track of the line yourself.

Saturday, Second look.

Yesterday I was astonished and a little taken aback about how easy it is, with this tool, to make a picture out of nothing. I got a little defensive about it. A day later, that hasn't gone away.

Today I took a shot that already has good bones and asked AI what I should do with it.

I ran it through a couple of templates and found one that gave me, basically, this. I played with some sliders to get it here. I don't like that cliff. It was a gray, overcast day and AI took all traces of that mood out. I don't know enough about how to fix that yet. Bring some of that overcast back in.

Still, I like it. Everything about the original is still there, just with more pop. I doubt I have the Adobe skills to get near this on my own.

Isn't this just a free trial just like you can get for pretty much every software? Says "enter trial mode" for me.

The same for me, thought I would look at it but ended up deleting it almost straight away. I do have Luminar 4 that is a free version and use that with Lightroom 5.6 (which I dont fully understand to get the best out of it) I dont have photoshop, or even know how to use it..Im not very good at understanding software !

I don't understand why you were unable to install an UN-fettered version pf this software. This is wghat I did.

  1. Clicked the download link
  2. Filled in my email address (and my name?)
  3. Received and email with a download link and activation key number
  4. Downloaded a small installation file
  5. Installation started and more files were downloaded
  6. I was then instructed to create a Skylum account which I did
  7. The next step was to start up Luminar AI
  8. I then had to login using my username/ email and password
  9. Since then it has worked fine and as far as I can tell it is NOT a trial

At some point during this sequence I had to enter the activation number

This is what I see when I click on "About" in the Luminar Menu
IMAGE: https://i.postimg.cc/hv42HD1G/About.png
No mention of Trial

During the past week I have received 2 or 3 promotional emails suggesting that should upgrade to Luminar Neo. I half-expected this and do not think I am being badgered eccessively

[Edit] Simnce writing the above I found this link: https://support.humblebundle.com …nstallation-Instructions- (external link). It shows the Activation stage during installation

There should be an option to enter the activation key that is sent to you from Skylum. There was for me.

Sorry, but I did not receive an activation key. Maybe it was delayed (I’ll check later).

Did you receive a download link? If so, the activation key should be in the same email.

If not, start again from scratch.

I have found a couple of people in another photo forum that think this Skylum offer is only a trial. Either (a) they did not receive an activation code or (b) there is a point in the process where a
misstep can be made.
