Charles, we don't know much about your setup. We can't look over your shoulder.

Most monitors should be set to their native resolution. You should be able to find what that is by consulting its manual, or googling. Also, you can right-click the desktop (the display when there are no windows open or all windows are minimized) and click on Display Settings. Let us know what you see there.

How are you sizing the window of your browser that you use for POTN? (We really don't know what you are doing.)

I am not a computer GEEK at all. I am a dummy there.

I just went to my desktop screen and right clicked on a clear screen, then clicked on "Display Settings" that shows my display resolution is 1280 X 1024

Here in POTN if I go to FYEO then scroll down to "Page Margins" and then click on "Open the custom margins tool" I then see this. So if my computer is telling me my resolution is 1024, why is the custom margins page say I am at 1010??

Charles, the 1010 pixels refer to the long end, the width and it refers NOT to your screen resolution but to the width of the browser you are using when you visit POTN. So your resolution if fine and you should see the clickable page margins. Since you don’t it must be that your browser window is too small (as in too narrow).

Charles,
To Levina's point...
My laptop has a display resolution of 1920x1080, and if I shrink to a window size (for my browser window, on PC using Windows 10) which is less than 1/2 of the screen, the (black) outer margins go away and I cannot click in the margins to instantly navigate to the top of the POTN page. But if I enlarge the window sufficiently that the black margins appear, the ability to click in the black margin area to instantly navigate to the top of the POTN page returns.

I do not understand how it can now be smaller AFTER having my hard drive reformatted and the browser window is now smaller than it was BEFORE I had my hard dive formatted. There is no way for me to make my browser window any larger now. I can not drag it larger as there is nothing to grab to make it go larger.

I just now minimized my browser smaller then since I now have something to grab I grabbed each direction left and right took it as far is it would go, then top to bottom by hand. I just now went to FYEO to check the size and now I gat 1006, not 1010 like had earlier. It got worse!!

Each side of my screen is grey. Before all this the sides were black.

Well, if your browser window is full screen and your screen is 1280px wide, you should see POTN’s page margins. I’m sure we are all overlooking something. You are sure that your whole screen is filled with the browser, right?

Are you on a PC with Windows O/S software? If using Windows, at the upper right of the screen do you see [a short line, a single/double box, and an X]?
If single box is seen, click on that icon to expand the window to the full width of the monitor (double box should appear when at full screen display)
On your monitor, you would be seeing use of 1280 pixels, so the black sides should then be visible.

What browser are you using?

Do you mean the screen itself has grey bars on each side? Or are you referring to how POTN looks in your browser window?

If it’s the screen then your resolution is not correct and you need to change it to its native resolution. I’m a Mac user and have no idea how to do that in Windows, but Wilt will know.

That was interesting. I was replying to Wilt when mid reply Wilt deleted his post so I couldn’t reply anymore. That was a first.

So, it’s okay, Wilt!

For a Windows 10 PC...

  1. Click at bottom left of your screen area (Windows icon)
  2. Click on Settings (Gear icon)
  3. Click on System icon
  4. Click on 'Display'
  5. Click on 'Display resolution' and set it to 1280x1024 (your monitor hardware capability)
  6. Exit

Wilt, what on earth are you doing?
You misspell my name, I point that out in a nice enough way. You post an apology. You delete that apology and then you edit the post in which you misspelled my name to delete the part where you referred to me altogether.

Why?

Are you angry with me for having pointed out the misspelling?

I was confused by the 'I fixed your post'...I went back to my post and it was NOT fixed! So I fixed it, and I rescinded my earlier apology, as I no longer felt that post was needed. No anger at pointing out mispelling (I know a 'Levinia') But I don't understand where the 'To Levina's point' disappeared...I thought you did that?! But now I see that 'To Levina's point' is indeed still part of my Post #16, and spelled correctly. (do-do-do-do Twilight Zone tune)

LOL This is turning into a comedy of errors. I thought you removed the reference to me but that is not so. I looked at the wrong post!

I’m just glad all is good, Wilt.
