The 25 cap for hiding forums is working for me (I only need 21). I didn't waste any of the allotment on groups of forums I rarely visit though, such as "Gear Reviews", "Sample Photo Archives" and "Marketplace and Market Info". For those I just sorted them to the bottom of the list of forums and then collapsed them.

Without being able to collapse and sort the 25 limit would have been too low (for me).

I take it that you use the index ("Forums") as your start page? Collapsing doesn't remove forums from New Posts or RTAT.

Correct.

I usually just scan down the list of forums I’m interested in to see if there was activity. New Posts is too flooded with things I have no interest in.

I never use RTAT.

Thanks. That wouldn't work well for me. Often the Forums page would show boldface (= new activity) for a forum but not for the threads I wanted to see. I just tried out your method with Competitions, where I regularly participate in a few threads, not nearly all of them. So there'd be lots of unproductive click/tapping due to entering forums and exiting quickly.

Makes sense. I can see why my approach wouldn’t work for you.

My issue is that I don’t visit the photo sharing/completions forums much but I only hide about half. For me New Posts is always flooded with “post your best” threads that I have zero interest in. It’s way more efficient for me to quickly scan the last post time stamps for the forums I frequent and go from there.

I do really like the new heads up feature regarding replies.

I only use FYEO and New Posts to see what I have missed on POTN. I would like to filter a bit more too, but I am accustomed to just quickly viewing the list of posts from New Posts to find things that sound interesting to me, then I look at the forum it is located under to either move on, or view the post.

I don't use RTAT, I don't go to the forum listings, etc. FYEO and New Posts gets me through everything daily. :)

Don't visit the photo-sharing forums much? That struck me as so odd that I peeked at your profile to see what you do use POTN for. The answer turned out to be gear/tech subjects. You start threads in forums high on my Hide These list. I'm here for the pictures, mostly.

This just goes to show––management, are you listening?––what a diverse lot POTN is. Members have varying needs. They don't share any one purpose. It follows that a policy of––

. . . and here I'll shut up before I get into trouble.

OhLook,

We have tons of ways to browse and find posts. We have about the best follow threads notification system there is. We have about the best search interface there is. We have several types of index pages, personal indexes in FYEO, galleries and search by camera data....

I'm not sure what you are talking about, "management, are you listening". Frankly that sounds rude to me. Last I checked this forum has been just updated, some things fixed right away to your liking after that. I've spend literally tens of thousands of hours to make this forum better in every generation (22nd year now). FYI it's 1 am here now and I have spent three hours debugging and fixing some bugs, and wrote a script for creating Google sitemaps for those new 500,000 hosted preview images we have now here (500,000 more to do). It's only fun as long as I feel that this forum is needed and appreciated.

To complain that some feature is useless for "me" and "I" do not use this feature but "I" want to do it this way -- that is simply (. . . and here I'll shut up before I get into trouble).

I didn't mean to be rude. No mods had posted in this thread until now, and I didn't know whether any were watching it. There are fewer mods than there used to be. I can imagine that the current volunteers are overworked, taking care of such a large forum.

It's only fun as long as I feel that this forum is needed and appreciated.

It certainly is needed and appreciated by me and many others.

To complain that some feature is useless for "me" and "I" do not use this feature but "I" want to do it this way -- that is simply (. . . and here I'll shut up before I get into trouble).

Well, you can't get into trouble, but I can. I don't quite understand what the issue is here. In a forum this large and complex, with so many features and so many members, necessarily not everyone will use every feature. Bob_A's choice of the Forums page as his "home base" works for him; for me, New Posts is more efficient and practical. That's not a complaint. I don't begrudge him the Forums page or anything like that. :-) In fact, one virtue of POTN is its variety of ways to find things, to move from one part to another, to see what's new since the last visit. People can customize their use of the site to fit their purposes. I'm not complaining about any feature. It's only that the limit on hiding forums is curtailment of a feature.

I'll PM you sometime soon with information that may explain . . .

Now that we know you are monitoring, can you reveal your thoughts / views on the POTN feature change being discussed?

I'm glad to see that––both parts of it. The limit on filtering doesn't sit well with some members. It's an inconvenience and a threat to autonomy, and how it might help POTN isn't at all clear. This thread allows us to share strategies for coping with it while not monopolizing the Changelog thread with discussion of just one change.

I try to walk the filmy fiber between airing complaints and criticizing admins' actions (forum rules, you know). Not easy. But I believe that the management needs to know when something activates that saying we have in the U.S., the one about herding cats.

Is it me or is this a rather inappropriate question to ask a moderator?

I am now viewing all forums, even those I had hidden.
In FYEO It seems all forums changed and defaulted back to show.
How do I recover the old view, viewing only forums I wished to?

Thanks, - PNC

The answer has been given: hide the forums again in https://photography-on-the.net …fyeo.php?show=forumfilter . You can hide 25 forums from your view.

Debating this change won't change the change, that's my 0.02c (and change).

Debating this change won't change the change

Pekka,

It's been a long time. I really don't know if you're still into music or still in a band. But I'll assume so.

I would like to suggest you change your style of music. Perhaps consider changing into a style you don't like and maybe dislike strongly. It would probably be best to convince the whole band to change styles. If they won't, consider quitting the band and joining a band that plays the style of music you do not like and have no interest in. Why do I suggest this? Well, to paraphrase something found elsewhere on the net is this:

"Sometimes there is music you do NOT want to play. IMPORTANT NOTE: YOU WILL MISS A LOT OF GREAT MUSIC IF YOU DO NOT LIKE IT AND EXPOSE YOURSELF TO IT. - What is going on with music outside your comfort zone is often interesting and eye-opening."

As you think about this suggestion, perhaps it will help you understand the likes, dislikes, thoughts, actions, and requests of others.

After this post I will log out. You may delete my account. I realize that deleting an account, all posts associate with it and other stuff is a horrendous load on the server. As a result you may do so at your convenience, but I would appreciate deleting the account (and anything associated with it) within the next 30 days. Thank you. Bye.
