What would you do? I have a 5D4 purchased in 2017. It’s been a great camera and shutter count is probably around 10,000. The Main Dial is acting up and getting worse. Since I shoot mostly Manual, this can be somewhat limiting. Other than that, there are no issues with the camera. The camera is on its way to Canon repair for an estimate to fix. I am not sure what to expect from Canon, in regards to repairing/replacing the dial. Until yesterday, I thought I was just going to just pay what Canon quoted and get it fixed. Well, I went to a local photo shop and held/played with the R6 II. Now I’m torn and would like to hear if anyone has been in the same or similar boat and what you decided to do. I think these are my options. What am I missing, any other options?

1) Get it fixed and continue to use for a few more years. This is going to be very dependent on the quote from Canon.
2) Get it fixed and attempt to sell. Again, depending on quote and I’m not sure what used 5D4s are going for (although less and less every day). Purchase the R6 II
3) Don’t get it fixed and sell “As-Is”. Purchase the R6 II.
4) Don’t get it fixed. Use it as a backup in its limited capacity. My wife shoots Auto only, so issues with Main Dial not as big a deal for her. I could also envision a scenario where I lend it to family members that would also shoot Auto exclusively. Purchase the R6 II.

I’m leaning towards option 4. After researching, I’m not confident that Canon’s quote will be something I’m willing to pay. Would rather put the funds towards a new body. I apologize if this should be in a different subject forum.

Thanks!!

What is the quote? I would wait to make any kind of decision until you get the quote. 5D4 still go over over $1000, so there is that.

Thanks TeamSpeed! I don't have the quote yet. I don't expect it to be less than $500. Hopefully, I will be pleasantly surprised.

I'm with TS. Totally dependent on the quote. Under $500, that's a no brainer, fix it. Between $500 and $1000, Hmmm... gotta think on that one. Over $1k, sell as is and go for the R6

i love the R6/R5 bodies. i shot with one albeit just on a tripod filling in for a guy who had just had an appendectomy and had a big T&I shoot to do.

i love my 5D4 and 5D3 too though. i agree on the 'wait and see' approach to the quote. under 5 bills, repair and keep. i think even if it's close to a grand, in MY book, id have to keep it.

say its $1000 to repair. youre not going to sell it for $2000 to get the money back from the repair and get what the bodies are going for (low end) so that leaves you will selling it basically for the cost of repair and getting no equity from it, which means the R6 now hits you for $3k. you could sell it as is but a body needing $1000 in repairs might get you all of $800?

i know those numbers are just pulled out of my ear but i dont think i could swing moving it and spending on the R. i do want an R5 but its just not in the cards for me...

-im just trying. sometimes i succeed

I sold my 5DIV about 6 weeks ago locally for $1,250, which was less than I had hoped for but all I could get. I advertised it here for a bit more but got no bites. It had about 84,000 clicks. So, you would make money on a sale even if it did cost something to repair it.

Just curious, when you guys are saying that you have trouble with the dial, what type of trouble? What's it doing (or not doing)??

I rotate the dial and the camera doesn't respond to it. If I press in on the dial when it rotates the camera responds.

I always get confused when folks say "main dial" as you could be meaning the dial by the shutter button, or you could be meaning the dial on the back...

If it's the dial by the shutter button that's faulty then definately get it repaired - part number is cg2-5253-000 and is pretty cheap really (US$40 - 60) and should take a good tech about 15 minutes to swap out.

If it's the rear dial then it'll be a little bit more expensive as they often only have the dials & buttons as part of a complete rear assembly (one on ebay for US$70)

either way, I'd repair it!

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

For me it is the dial by the shutter button.

As for the op, still not sure, as both manual and auto were called out, so I assume it’s the wheel on the back?

That mode dial isn’t used in manual, so for a wheel to be problematic in the manual mode as the post calls out, it must be the rear wheel, or the one by the shutter button.

Don’t be totally dependent on Canon for the repair. Once you get the Canon quote, post the amount here and perhaps someone will have some quality independent shops that can handle the work for a cost likely to be about 75% of the Canon price.

For me, it is also the dial by the shutter button. For example, when I rotate for an increase in shutter speed, it can do nothing, skip past settings, decrease shutter speed, etc. It is very erratic and started maybe a year or so ago as a minor annoyance and now is just much worse.

Joseph,,,,,,,I have seen a video of someone replacing that dial and it CAN be done. I agree that it should be a relatively simple fix for a Canon repair tech that has done many of these, but I don't think the quote I will get (probably next week) will reflect what should be a sub $200 repair. I am very much a DIYer and worst case .... may try the repair myself.

Thanks everyone for the replies and I will update when I hear back from Canon.

John ...... I am located in the Baltimore area, so I may not be too far from you. Not opposed to going a different route than Canon service. I tried the one place that I know that might do the repair and they no longer do camera repairs, just sales and coordinate repairs through Canon. According to them, Canon has made it very difficult, if not impossible, to get the replacement parts. If you know places/individuals that would repair, I am interested.
