I'm curious to know what you think about these new models.

Canon is really starting to pump out new equipment at an accelerating rate. The R8 and R50 seem to offer low pricing to entice new users to mirrorless technology. But with R6s coming down in price and R10s being relatively new and not that much more expensive, these introductions were a surprise to me. I would love to see the sales figures going forward across the different models.

Is Canon coming out with products too fast? Are they meeting the needs of existing users by making products/updates that they want? Are new models going to continue to be introduced at this rate? I don't follow any other brands so I don't know if this is typical.

I was comparing the old R6 with the R8; things I was not clear on was:

  1. VF resolution and refresh rate (R8 VF resolution seems to be the same as the R7).
  2. Sensor read out speed and rolling shutter.

The R8 seems to use LP-E17 battery so not compatible with my other cameras....

I see the R50 as the "bridge" for the R to the M market, underscored, IMO, by Canon's choice of the model number 50. Ever since Canon announced the APS-C R7 and R10 last May, something like this has been a logical next step.

The R8 seems like a bargain for FF shooters. It has the same sensor and AF system as the R6II, for $1000 less. The main features I'm aware of that it lacks, versus the R6II, are IBIS, a second card slot, a fully mechanical shutter (and the high frame rate when not in ES), and it uses the lower capacity LP-E17 battery. If you can live with those limitations, it seems like a great value.

I think what Canon is doing now is very similar to what they were doing with DSLRs before the R series was announced, with multiple models at different price/feature points (1Dx-whatever, 5DIV, and 6DII in FF, 7DII, 90D, 77D, Txi/xxxD, Tx/xxxxD, and SLx/x00D in APS-C). Perhaps the strategy is, in a shrinking market, having many products available in different price points, even if they're very close together, makes them more appealing to the non-equipment geek consumer on a limited budget.

EDIT: Changed M6II references to R6II (Thanks TeamSpeed!) and incorrect statement about R8 SD card speed (Thanks Lester!).

I think you meant to say R6II and not M6II? Two very different models!

Says UHS-II SD card slot but agree "no sensor shift" (IBIS).

Disappointing, with the low end battery.

My bad on the UHS-II card. Thanks for pointing that out.
