I rarely use One Shot too, 99% AI Servo, but I have a button configured to switch should I need it. Even with portraits, etc. If I shoot portraits, I rarely use a tripod, so I or the subject could always be shifting a bit during the shots.

I never use one shot, I use back button with two buttons setup, both on servo. One with spot focus and the other with eye focus. I do not notice a problem with static subjects. I do sometimes hit the back button for a brief moment to focus and then don't push it for the actual shot, I guess that's my one shot focus method.

That was always my thinking too, but from the comments and suggestions in this thread I'm now doubting it's usefulness in some scenarios, and it may be one of the causes of the issues I've reported, and others on the linked thread (https://photography-on-the.net …read.php?t=1528487&page=1).

I've returned my R6 and will be replacing with the R6 mkII, which has improved AI focusing. I'm wondering if that will help. I assume the same improvement will be available on the R5 mkii as well.

Back in the early DSLR days, I had discussions with several Canon factory reps. as to One-shot, VS AI-Servo, VS AI Focus.

AI-Focus was designed to be One-shot & AI Servo rolled into one ( Focus on a still subject in AI-Focus, and if the subject suddenly moves the camera performs as in AI-Servo).

Every Rep. advised me to just leave the Camera in AI-Servo and forget the others and I've done so with my former DSLR's, and my current R5 remains in Servo mode.

The only thing notable in Servo, is you don't get an AF lock beep confirmation, which is of no concern to me, and I've never had a problem with still shots in Servo Mode.:-D

I raised my issue with Canon and this was one of the comments I had:

however if you use AI Servo and you are shooting a static subject, the AF can make fine adjustments because the camera is in a mode where it tries to track a subject, and static subjects are best shot in One Shot AF.

Perhaps this is to overcome a limitation or issue with my R6. I agree with you that the AI servo should just work all the time.

There are also settings in the menu to prioritize focus vs shutter and settings for how servo acts when it detects other objects in the frame, you may want to brush up on those for your particular needs.

Also as a passing thought, don't actually expect a 100% focus rate, the camera is doing a lot of hunting for subjects between shots.
