In the past it was purchases via brick and mortar store, not to far. If camera would appears BOA, it was trip to the store for exchange or full refund.

Was this not an option? Five days after receiving should be within return policy...

Canon has never in the 25 years I've used their gear offered free "send in" shipping for warranty repairs.

They used to do free shipping for returns, but now according to their USA site, CPS GOLD for $120 a year gets free returns, and PLATINUM gets both ways for $300 a year.

Alternatively a Care-Pak covered item gets both ways.

It is a common practice, just google shipping for warranty defective and see all the discussions. I rarely remember a time where I thought I had a defective product and the other side offered to pay to ship it to them to review it and validate. In other cases of established defects or recalls or service bulletins on something, then I have had shipping covered up front.
