100mm L macro - focus ring moves by itself after camera powers off

Hey everyone, just noticed an odd behavior my lens is exhibiting, and was wondering if this is expected or not.

I’m using an EOS R with an EF mount lens adapter, and the lens in question is a 100mm L. When I power the camera off, the focus ring will move by itself, to “infinity” focusing distance.

I’m using MF, but AF appears to be working just fine. Either the lens has always done this and I have just not been paying attention, or it is an unexpected behavior.

Here is a video showing what is happening:

Thank you!

Could be setting in the camera.

RP and some digit R had same prone to failure on/off switch and with this failure camera never turns off while switch is on off and have chaotic af activity.

Are you able to try this with a different EF lens on the adapter? Perhaps some lens needs to be at infinity to safely detach from the adapter and the camera does this for all lenses in case of a future need.

Try Settings. Camera icon(orange) > option 4 > Retract lens on power off > OFF

Edit: That menu is on my R5, not sure if it's the same as your camera, but it's the "Retract lens on power off" option.

...and this was it, thanks!! Apparently I haven't used this lens with this camera body yet (totally thought I did) and I missed that setting.

I appreciate the help!

This must be a glitch.

This auto retract feature is designed to retract the extending front element on certain lenses. Canon added this feature shortly after the introduction of the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM. This lens has a front element that can be easily pushed in when attaching the lens cap. On early versions of this lens, pushing on the front element would cause the AF mechanism to temporarily stop working. There was a lens firmware upgrade to correct this problem.

It serves no purpose on an internally focusing lens like the EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro.

Here is a video showing how it is supposed to work: https://youtu.be/pQeUtkFhqHQ (external link)

The manual says it applies to gear-type STM lenses. And I just tried it; it works on my pancake 40 mounted to the R7! Acts just like a P&S.
