Hi All,
I'm going to Yellowstone and the Tetons in June and am looking to get a new body since my M(1st gen) died and my 50D is heavy and starting to have issues.
My Max budget is $2000 body, lenses, batteries but I would like to keep it under that and sneak the SD cards and

Right now I'm planning on getting an R50 for size, weight and budget.
Assuming I get the R50, would these be lenses be a good complement for landscape and animals (buffalo, deer, moose, bear, ect.)
I'm a hobbyist but my wife, who isn't needs, to be able to operate the camera as well, at least with the tele as. She is very excited about seeing and getting pictures of the animals.
Here's what I'm looking at getting at the moment.

R50 with 18-45 IS USM ($799)
Canon RF 100-400mm F/5.6-8 IS (~$500 used KEH) <<-- This would be about 640mm f12 equivalent right?)
Knock off lens hood (~$15 https://www.amazon.com …mm-Replaces/dp/B06XTP2FD3 (external link))
Canon EF-S 10-18mm F/4.5-5.6 IS STM (~$220 used KEH)
Canon EF to RF adapter (~150 for the one with the control ring)
The stupid extra flash module ( ~$50usd probably won't be brining this on the trip but need to if I ever want to use a speedlight on the body)
4 128GB Samsung pro plus with adapter ($15x4 is 4 enough? If these are a bad idea I'm open cards. like the idea of the micro card so I can do a backup using a surface go and a USB C SSD)
2 LP-E17 ($60*2)

price comes out to
W/O tax ~$1899
with tax ~$2042

is there and thing her I should dump? is there anything here I should swap for something else? Is there something I missed?

Thanks in advance for you help and opinions.

I'm not too familiar with the R50, but I have an R7 and the Canon RF 100-400 is a great lens. I believe it's on sale right now for $50 or $100 off MSRP, so you might be able to get a new one for not much more than what KEH is charging for used.

If the "stupid extra flash module" you mention is the AD-E1 shoe adapter, you don't need that unless you have one of the new high-end weather-sealed flashes and need to preserve the weather sealing on the camera's shoe while using it. The R50's built-in shoe should accept any EX-series Canon flash without an adapter, or compatibles from Godox, Flashpoint, etc.

Check out this video (external link) for info on the shoe adapter, starting at time 1:55.

For batteries, since you're on a budget, check out Wasabi batteries on Amazon. I've used a bunch over the years and they're a great value. Amazon (external link) has a kit with two batteries and a travel charger (including 12V DC plug) for $26.99.

EDIT: Other than the 100-400, I didn't comment on your lens selection. One thing I notice is that with the ones you mention, you have a big gap in focal length between 45 and 100 mm, which may be a range you'll want. If the RF-S 18-150 is available instead of the 18-45, that may be a good choice. I've used both the RF-S and EF-M versions of that lens, and it's definitely a great performer for the price. There's also an RF 24-105 f/4-7.1 STM in a similar price range, but I've never used it.

Are you shooting a lot of video? Full raw images or jpg? The amount of cards/ memory seems like a bit of overkill to me, especially if limited/no video and/or just jpg’s. I’m inferring this as the kit feels like you are covering all possible general purpose wildlife and landscape bases sightseeing vs. say dedicated wildlife sessions with 1000’s of images in a few hours, which for me, would not warrant so much memory. For example, we are going to DC, have not been there in 40yrs, and I’ll carry a 24-105, 70-200, and 16mm, shooting CRAW, I’ll have 2 64gb cards in my R6, and don’t anticipate even filling 1 in the 6 days we are there. I’ve never come out of Rocky Mtn Nat’l park with more than a few hundred images on any 1 day and did not fill 1 card on a week long family trip to Moab/Canyonlands, but that’s me. If you do need the memory for very heavy day use, 100% agree on the need for a travel/car charger, and 3 batteries would be a bare minimum. Could shave a few $’s here possibly.

I agree on the gap in coverage. Consider an adapted EF-S 18-135 in lieu of the 18-45. If you are already adapting a 10-18, and carrying a 100-400, I offer the slightly larger lens size should not be an issue and will give a lot more flexibility in my opinion. I shot with an adapted 15-85 on my previous M50. I still have that lens, and happily use it on an R7 over the current RF-S options. Could probably pick up a good used copy of an 18-135 for not a lot of $’s.

Do you really need the control ring adapter? Why not just a standard? I’ve never used the control ring on my RF lenses, and don’t miss it on my adapted lenses. A standard adapter could save a few $’s.

18-135 is another excellent choice. BUT make sure you get one that says either USM or STM. Those have much better image quality than the older ones without those designations.

Are you considering the EF to RF adapter ONLY for the 10-18mm? What other lenses do you have? I assume you have other EF/EF-S lenses since you already have the 50D?

IF you don't already have EF/EF-S lenses, then I suggest saving money by not buying the adapter and go with an RF24-105mm STM + RF100-400mm + 12mm f/2.8 7artisans manual focus lens (which I have never used so I can't vouch for the performance of the 7artisans lens) and be done with it. If my math is correct, these 3 lens + R50 body will run you about $1829 before tax/shipping

Keep your eyes on the Canon Refurb site. They blow out lenses periodically. I was able to get an RF24-105 STM for $119 - for a mint/new condition one.

Thank you for your posts.

@mcoren the hot shoe is one of the new style ones, but doesn't have the old style pins at all. You have to buy the adapter to fire old speedlights (430ex ect.)
I don't need that right now though as I wasn't planning on carrying a flash other than what comes on the body. so we can strike that from the budget.

Lenses I currently have are
18-55 ef-s 3.5-5.6 II (not the IS, it's in excellent shape but has never been very clear.)
28 2.8 EF
50 1.8 EF mk2
85 1.8 EF USM

my other lenses are manual and not worth even mentioning.

We are "camping" in Yellowstone and the Tetons for a week and a half, I plan on shooting raw as much as possible and some video as well. I've also got a heavy shutter finger. but can pair theses down as I should be able to dump things to the SSD.

The Wasabi batteries seem to have good reviews so I will probably get those instead of the two canons.
We are renting a camper van instead, so the car charger seems like a good idea as well.

I like the idea of just getting the body and going with a slightly longer lens and will definitely look on the canon refurb store for the 24-105 RF and will the 18-135 STM and see what makes sense to get based on cost size ect.

right now I'm thinking this

R50 & 18-45 ($799) ordered
Canon EF-S 10-18mm F/4.5-5.6 IS STM (~$195 used KEH) ordered
Canon RF 100-400mm F/5.6-8 IS (~$519 Canon Referb Ordered
Canon EF to RF with Control ring (~$118 B&H used) Ordered
Knock off lens hood (~$15 https://www.amazon.com …mm-Replaces/dp/B06XTP2FD3 (external link))
2 Wasabi power BTR-LPE17-JWP Batteries and car charger (~$27 https://www.amazon.com …01AX0DXFU?ref_=ast_sto_dp (external link))
at least 2 * 128gb microSD cards (~$31)
____
~$1823.28 with tax

That's very interesting. Like I said, I'm not that familiar with the R50, but you're right, it appears from the picture at the Canon USA web site that they've removed the "standard" pins from the shoe. The R3, R6II, R7 and R10 also have the new multi-function shoe, but they all have the conventional flash pins too. I've used both my 10-year old Canon 430 EX II and a more recent FlashPoint/Godox TT350C on the R7 without any adapter or any problems.

Kind of a slimy way to get you to buy another $40 accessory. Even if they expect most customers to use the built-in flash, I can't imagine the couple of additional pins in the shoe add that much to the cost.

The Canon RF 100-400 F/4.5-8 IS is $519.99 with free shipping on the Canon USA refurb site now.

Personally I would be ok with the 18-45 and 100-400, the gap would not bother me for vacation.

@mcoren, The R50 was just released today (3/16) so it's very new and it does feel kind of slimy.

Thank you for the tip on the Canon referb store!

okay everything is order, I went back and forth on this a lot, but I got the 18-45 manly because of the physical length and the IS,

Almost everything is ordered except for a couple of accessories.

I'll let you know if everything works well or not and how the lens gap is. The good news is there is still enough time to to correct issues if any come up.

Thank you all for your help!

Have a great trip! And definitely let us know how the kit works out for you.

I don’t see a “ Canon EOS R50 owners unite! Post photos and discuss” thread. You should start one since you have it on order. :-)

I think you'll be happier with the RF18-45 verses an adapted EFS 18-135 for the sheer aspect of size and balance.

I found that the EFS 18-135 was too awkward on the SL2 to lug around the neck or shoulder for extended outings. And the R50 is even smaller and lighter than the SL2 (and the R50 will require the added weight of the EF to RF adapter).

Here is a photo comparison of the RF24-105 STM verses an adapted EFS 18-135. Weight is 395 grams verses 645 grams, respectively.
The R50 body only with battery is 375 grams.

Yeah, I think the 18-45 will work out. It's small enough that I think it will be almost pocket able, assuming large pockets any way.
