I am just returning to the world of photography. I had a 5d mk iii and a 1d mk iv, but my kids have taken them over. Now I am looking in to a newer mirrorless canon camera. I think pretty much any EOS R camera it better than my 5d mk iii at this point. I am more of a hobbyist, taking lots of family portraits, some sport events (not many), and street photography. I don't need top of the line and don't want bottom either. So with all that said I am having the hardest time choosing. I know I want to stick with canon but would like some others insight into their experience with these cameras. Thanks in advance.

Well, the current model setup from Canon is reasonably straight forward.
Your 5D Mark III becomes the R5.
Your 1D Mark IV becomes the R3.

Now, to step down one notch, you end up with this instead:
Your 5D Mark III becomes the R6 Mark II.
Your 1D Mark IV becomes the R7.

It's just a question about how much you want to spend. There's quite a cost difference between the two groups. And, of course, you can pick only one camera, if you prefer.
Myself, I choose the R3, but I wanted an extension to the 1DX Mark II. If I was to pick sometthing one notch down, I'd pick the R6 Mark II.

If your primary interest is sports, action, wildlife consider the R6mk2 or R3 (AF more important than pixel count) . If landscape, portrait, still life then R5 (pixels more important then AF) . If you're looking for a crop sensor then R7.

You will find any of these options a major upgrade vs your previous cameras.

I want to stick with a full frame so that rules out the R7 and the R3 is currently out of the running on price alone. That leaves the R5, R6, R6mk ii or even just the R. I am leaning towards the R6 just to keep the dual memory slots. But is the R6 Mk ii worth the extra money?

The R is a decent mirrorless representation of the 5D4. It wouldn’t be a bad choice at all, but the R6 kills the R in all ways other than resolution. I would really consider one of those two for what you described.

Definitely leaning to the R6 now even more because canon has a refurb for 1799. that will give me room for some new glass :)

The r6 is a great camera
For stills it is almost as good as the mrk2 (hard to tell the difference)
The video features of the r6 are good but the mk2 better
Based on your description you will enjoy the r6

If you have old ef glass it works very well on the r system (buy a 3rd party adapter and you are good to go)

I want to stick with a full frame…

I’d love to know the reasons.

Personal preference. I shot with 35mm film for years. I still have my old FD mount canon AE-1 and eos rebel xs kiss somewhere in the garage :) . So I like the look and feel I guess you can say. plus having to taking the few steps back to reframe a subject using a 50mm on a x1.3 crop vs a 50mm on a full frame. Yeah I know its only a few steps but I am lazy  .

I still have all my old glass and really don't do video so looks like R6 it is. :-)
