When reading online, I don't get an impression that most people know there's a difference. That includes people who are paid to write something, such as advertising.

Yes, some are sure the two-word version is bad English.
I read literally, so when somebody writes (say) it's instead of its, I get the wrong meaning, and have to read that part again.
Good writing is easy to read.
