Hello,

My Daughter has been showing an interest in wildlife photography and she currently has a T3i and She is looking for a zoom lens. I was thinking the 55-250 STM or a 75-300. I was hoping to not spend a lot of money, as we know how kids are, if she continues, then hell yeah, We will get her better lenses. But to start, that's where I am at. So, maybe $100 dollar range?

Thanks in advance,

Cole

The 55-250 is a much better lens. I think it's a bit over $100 but worth it.

You can get used 75-300s practically for free, so there's that in their favor. I have one lying around somewhere that I'd probably give away if I could find it, because I have accumulated several other options in that focal length range.

If you go here you can click on different versions of the lens and browse gallery images that were taken with it:

https://photography-on-the.net …mf=1&find=75-300&list=all

Yes, the 55-250 is probably better. So is the 70-300. I have all three and more. :) But that one works, and if that's what she has she can certainly take pictures with it.

I posted this for sale ad a while back but still have the Lens. It's in perfect condition sitting in its original box. Let me know if interested.

There is a vast supply of those lenses on the used market. On any given day, Ebay will have dozens of copies in your price range.

You might put a 70-300mm on your list. From what I understand, any version of that lens is much better, optically than the 75-300. Plus, it looks and feels more like a telephoto lens than the 55-250. That doesn't affect its performance, but in the hands of a novice, looking and feeling the part can influence how seriously they take the pursuit. Used copies of a 70-300 can be found in your price range pretty easily.

That 55-250 in Moody Blues' post above looks like a pretty good copy.

Stay away from the 75-300 lenses, I have never seen one that was very good.

I have used 2 different older versions, owned by a friend and they were both very soft at 300mm

My order of preference is:
1. 70-300 IS. More than $100 but optically, this is a fine lens.
2. 55-250. Also a decent lens but sucks at 300mm. :):)
3. 75-300. It depends on which one your talking about. The 75-300IS is not so bad from what I have heard (never used it) but the 75-300 II and the 75-300 III work well but nothing special.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.
