Søndre Strømfjord (Sondrestrom among english speakers) lies in Greenland. It was established by the aviator Bernt Balchen during WWII as a refueling stop for planes on their way to and from Europe. After the war it became a permanent US Air Force base along with Thule, the latter is located further north. Sondrestrom was decommisioned a few years ago, so now it is only Thule left as an US Air force base on Greenland! I lived in Greenland 1975-1981 and I watched almost the entire inventory in the US Air Force, except the C-5 Galaxy and the SR-71.
Back in those days I had an Olympus OM-2n camera and got printed pictures. So here is one, a scanned picture of a C-17 Globemaster.

SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) had accomodations in one corner of the base. Here the civilian planes unloaded and loaded on passengers for Europe and the rest of Greenland.
Here we see a DC-8 on the tarmac.

Sometimes they used DC-10s from Copenhagen to Greenland.

Once we flew with an old DC-6 propeller plane. On our way to Copehagen two engines stopped and we had to make an emergency landing in Norway!
