I know this has probably been asked quite a lot, but is there any way at all to get the shutter count on the 80d Canon?

Well, there must be some way to get it, since some people are reporting their 80D's "mileage":

You might try...

https://www.camerashuttercount.com/ (external link)
https://www.freeshuttercount.com/ (external link)

If your computer is a Mac, there are other programs designed for it (I'm using a Windows PC, which uses the above).

Or some of the methods outlined here...

https://www.colesclassroom.com …count-on-my-canon-camera/ (external link)
https://fixthephoto.com/canon-shutter-count.html (external link)

Of course this only tells you a number that may or may not be very relevant. For example, while the average shots before failure reported with a small number of submissions at the http://www.olegkikin.com/shutterlife/sitemap.php (external link) website is a rather low 35,244 clicks, some cameras there lasted well beyond the 100,000 lifespan Canon typically predicts for a camera in the xxD series (they increased the 90D to 120,000).

Obviously, today's digital cameras are complex machines and a mechanical shutter is just one of many components that can fail. We use shutter count just like car mileage, to try to get some idea of how much use a camera has seen.

But, not all "clicks" are the same. For example, a camera that's been used for a lot of video can have a very low number of clicks but far more "time" on the components than one that's been used exclusively for still photos. For example, one hundred 5 minute videos would generate 500 clicks, but the amount of time is equivalent to 75 million 1/250 exposures! Of course, some of the components in a camera are active any time it's on and not in sleep mode. Others are only active during exposure.

FWIW, I just tried https://www.camerashuttercount.com/ (external link) on images from 7D Mark II and EOS M5 cameras and it was not able to retrieve shutter count from them. It did recommend a Mac software that it says can read the 7DII files, but that doesn't help me with my PC and it was completely stumped by the M5. I see that MPB.com reports 7DII clicks, so there must be some way to get that info. But they don't show M5 clicks, so I am probably out of luck with that (maybe Canon has a way to read it, if I sent it to them).

One way you can't do it is through EXIF readers. Canon stopped including that data point 10 or 15 years ago.

The only app I know of that works, and I've looked hard, is called ShutterCount, from Dire Studio. It's not free, but it's pretty cheap. Biggest thing, it only works on Apple products. No Windows, no Android, only Apple.

You have to connect it through the "Camera Connect" path on the 80D.
