Shot with Bronica ETRS with 250mm lens and 2x teleconvertor in 1987 on Kodak Ektachrome 100, Glacier Grey visible in the background seen about 9 miles across the waters of Lago Grey, with icebergs in the foreground. Scan of a Cibachrome print.

1987! I had hard time recognizing this as glacier Grey. Those icebergs! One poster in the park mentioned the glacier is receding at a speed about 100 meters per year. Here is a view from Mirador near Refugio Grey:

Sad that the world's glaciers are now receding so quickly.

My wife and I visited three of the glaciers on the South Island of New Zealand in about 2006, and they were receding even then...signs indicated the past extent of the glaciers vs. its then current edge. I wish I had photographed that sign back then.
Research has shown that the Fox Glacier has retreated by about 880 meters – more than half a mile – since 2009 when the most recent retreat phase began. The biggest change to guide Macoimb Richards’ operations came in 2014...after several years of rapid retreat by the glaciers, they could no longer safely lead clients from the valley onto the glaciers (as had been done by guides for over 100 years, until 2014). Now guides rely on helicopters to deliver clients to the ice.
Franz Josef Glacier seems to be retreating much faster than the Fox Glacier. Since 2008, it has lost 1.56km (over 4940') in length, the fastest rate ever recorded.

A shot from Fox Glacier in 2006, showing a massive cave in the glacier.

Glacier Perito Moreno supposedly is the only one still growing:

I did some quick checking, and apparently Perito Moreno is NOT 'the only one growing'...in the Himalayas are some growing glaciers, and Hubbard Glacier is the largest of eight calving glaciers in Alaska that are currently increasing in total mass and advancing.

Good to learn. I remembered I saw it somewhere when I visited the glacier last month, maybe they meant the only one in south America/Patagonia area.

It is some relief to learn that there are some glaciers that are growing rather than receding. OTOH, it is really worrisome to hear that ice in Antarctica is breaking off...the Brunt Ice Shelf break off occurred on January 22, 2023, and produced a new iceberg with an area of 1550 square kilometers (about 600 square miles)

While Glacier Grey is not in this shot, I thought I'd show you a shot of many icebergs nearer the southern end of Lago Grey back in 1987

Thanks for sharing! Makes me wonder what this place will like 30 years from now.
