Hi, I'm a long term 5DIII user and i've just bought my first RF camera, a R8.
I'm thrilled with it and mirrorless has come a long way!

Has anyone found out how to turn on the Live view histogram?
There's one in the VF menu, but it doesn't seem to appear in my VF or the rear screen.
The only way for me to see an histogram on my R8 seems to be after a photo has been taken / during the review options.
Am I missing something or is it a feature missing on the R8?

I don't have my R8 with me at the moment, but the feature is definitively there. Here is a link to Bryan Carnathan's (The Digital Picture) recommended R8 setup

https://www.the-digital-picture.com …timate-Canon-EOS-R8-Setup (external link)

It has steps for setting up the histogram. Also, if you press the info button the EVF (and back LCD) will cycle through different views. You can give that a try and that might fix your issue.

Thanks!
About 10 minutes ago i stumbled across the setting that was blovking the histogram: if i have OVF Sim. View Assist: ON then the Histogram disappears from the screen and view finder.

I'm really enjoying the camera. I didn't like the EOS R, which I passed on. I like the EOS R5 a lot. But I figured I'd get an R8 to get me up to speed with the newer AF and features, while I save from a R5 later.
Once I have both, I can then let my beloved pair of 5DIII's go after 11 years of faithful service.

I just got an Canon EG-E1 Extension Grip for my R8 and it's fantastic. I didn't really feel the need for a battery grip. I've never even gone through half a battery in an outing. Of course I'm an amateur and don't shoot as many shots as some might but a spare battery in the pocket works for me. The extension adds almost no weight and feels great in hand.

I found that the little battery seemed to loose charge quite quickly for the first few charges. Then on the 3rd charge it seemed to kick in its full charging capacity and it now lasts a lot longer.
Low light stuff seems to drain the battery fairly quickly. So yes I will order a spare too.

I’m getting used to the newer handling and menus, I’m adjusting to the really smaller body size.

I have a lot of EF glass already, but I think I’ll be investing in a few native RF lenses too. A 24-70 f2.8 and the mighty 100-500L would be very nice.

I haven't used the Canon battery yet. I had two Artman batteries with a dual charger that I bought for my RP (which I sold) and I have been using those. So far, they seem to do OK.

Adapted glass does just fine. I recall when I moved from the 5D3 to the R5 how amazed I was with the focusing accuracy! In particular, with fast primes. My keeper rate with the Sigma Art 85mm f/1.4 went up the roof! Yeah, the body is smaller. I recall thinking the R5 felt like a toy when I moved from the 5D3. But then I got used to it and started to think the 5D3 was a clunker :-D Jumping from the 5D3 to the R8 must exacerbate this effect.

There are some improvements with RF glass. In some cases, with significant improvement in sharpness, others with focusing speed improvements. But often, I have found that unless the EF version had some well-known shortcomings, the lens EF to RF improvement is nowhere near as significant as the AF improvements from DSLR to Mirrorless.

The R8 feels tiny compared to my 5DIII's. It's literally half the weight. The R8's grip is nice feeling in my hands and I'm getting use to the newer ergonomics, layout and UI.
It's a far more sophisticated device than the 5DIII. The AI servo actually works reliably with all of the points active. I love the flip out screen. I don't use movie mode, so I've re-mapped the red record button for lens stop down.
I thought that I wouldn't liekt he smaller camera body. But I actually really liking it. I think a R5 is in my future and this R8 will become my 2nd camera body.
With the ef to RF adapter, I'm finding my ef glass feels very balanced in my left hand. I seem to be holding the lens more than the camera, which is a better way of holding a camera / lens.

I've gone for the meike drop-in adapter, with CPL, clear and vari ND options. It's very good and it allows me to use a CPL or vari ND with any lens in my arsenal (including a 8-15mm fisheye and a TSE 17L. If I can find some regular 4 /6 /10 stop ND filters for this format...I might ditch all of my front faced filters (67/77 and 82mm).

I've noticed that the sensor seems to record more fine detail at 100% than the 5DIII and there's way more dynamic range. The files are little more muted in their colour responce as a result of the new DR / Sensor design. I really like the new CRAW format.
The 1st shutter 6fps is inkeeping with the 5DIII. But the 40fps electronic shutter is just insane. I've bought a set of newer (300mbs) SD cards for it.
I've not had the opportunity to run it though some wild life paces yet with my ef 400mm f2.8 LIS...however the trail shots in my garden have been very impressive. Certainly a higher AF accuracy.

The AF is vastly improved over the EOS R...which I really didn't like at all. The EVF is still not as good as a proper optical VF in low light landscape scenarios. I haven't sold my 5DIII's yet, but they are likely to go on ebay fairly soon. 85K and 24K shutter counts, not bad for 11 years of semi pro use.

I see you're using EF lenses. How well does the focus work with the EF-M Lens Adapter? I'm planning on purchasing the R8 soon but only have L lenses and don't really want to get rid of them.

It is actually the EF-EOS R adapter (not EF-M, M mount is different). I normally use the one with the Control Ring, that is, Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R.

I haven't used it too much with the R8, since I have transitioned to RF two years ago and have accumulated a number of RF lenses that I use with the R8. I have used adapted lenses extensively with the RF system, however, and my experience has been very positive. I don't think you will need to replace any EF L lenses. They work superbly with adapters, in my experience. Newer third-party lenses also do very well.

In particular, the Sigma and Tamron that lenses can be updated through the USB doc. For the older third-party lenses (that can't have FW updated through a USB doc) it is hit and miss. With Canon lenses, even older ones, I have had no issues and the improved AF of the mirrorless system just improves the hit rate of the AF system with exactly the same IQ for the lens.

I am so far happy and pretty impressed with my R8. Battery life isn't great but not that big of a deal. Lack of IBIS isn't a bid deal either for most shooting. This was 400mm handheld at 1/250 iso 6400.
