Thanks Gareth for your collection of excellent photos.
They certainly make me think of trading in my 7D for an R8 :-)
Mindyou the Canon EF 100mm Macro is helping you a lot :-)

Hi, I'm a long term 5DIII user and i've just bought my first RF camera, a R8.
I'm thrilled with it and mirrorless has come a long way!

Has anyone found out how to turn on the Live view histogram?
There's one in the VF menu, but it doesn't seem to appear in my VF or the rear screen.
The only way for me to see an histogram on my R8 seems to be after a photo has been taken / during the review options.
Am I missing something or is it a feature missing on the R8?

I don't know about the R8, but in the case of my R6 II, this histogram only appears in the viewfinder when exposure simulation is turned on.

Hope this helps.

My ef glass on my R8 operate amazingly well. One of the trickiest lenses I own to use is my 85mm f1.2 L. It’s dof is super shallow and the trick is to nail in focus eyes. It’s really not a problem with my R8.
Using the ef 100mm f2.8 Lis macro can be a challenge for the camera, because the AI doesn’t know what to do with a flower. So I change af mode to single point one shot and it’s fine.
I’ve not tried my big 400 f2.8 lis yet in a wildlife context. But I’m pretty sure it’ll be stellar.
My ef 16-35 II L, 24-70 f2.8 L, 8-15 fisheye, 135 f2.0 and 70-200 f2.8 Lis II have all operated far more accurately than they ever did on my 5D mk3’s.
The AF lock and tracking on the R8 is impressive as long as the camera understands the subject.

Just finished up a wedding with the R8 and Sigma 24-70 2.8 Art lens. It went well. I am still learning the camera, making some mistakes like messing up the focus point by hitting the screen, I have resorted to putting the camera in "lock" mode at times to stop this, I messed up the ISO and shutter speed numerous times too (note the groom shot, jeez). Focusing was spot on for the most part with the only issue being me at one point missing focus by using ONLY spot\center. I need to trust the AI focusing sometimes, especially with moving subjects coming towards me, I had it ALL turned off using spot focus only. Basically I dumbed it all down for this wedding, no servo, no eye tracking, people tracking etc. There was a heating up issue during the outside phase in 85deg. weather and direct sunlight. I turned airplane mode on which quickly resolved that. The particular lens is heavier then the camera I thought it would be an issue, but honestly once I got started I forgot all about that, it was fine.

I shot ISO 100 to 3200, the noise was well controlled with shadows showing some noise on underexposed images (had to zoom in at 100% to see it), my fault, noise reduction fixed it completely in post. The detail was amazing, and clarity of the images is outstanding, even witht he lens wide open, I actually found myself softening the bride images who was youngish and had no skin issues at all, it was just so sharp the pores were showing up like mad. White balance was good, colors were great and really popped, with my old Nikon gear I always found myself bumping saturation just a little, with this camera, not all. I shot Craw btw which worked well. I have not shot a wedding in about 10 years, and the camera was very new for me but overall I was thrilled with the results.

Lessons learned: use "lock" mode, disable the right button option on the 4 way wheel, I kept hitting it with my palm and I had it programmed to switch to servo. Work\learn the focusing option better.

annoying things: The battery indicator only has 3 bars really. So, When it got down to mid level I did switch because I had no idea how much time I had left, this is a learning curve though that I will figure out with more use. So, I went through 3 batteries, shot 1,400 images. Keep in mind, they never saw empty, I did it to make sure I didn't die at a key point. I think now, I could have done it w\2batteries, maybe?

The wedding moved really fast, it was organized chaos, not a lot of time to think really so I really depending on this camera to function well, and fast, and it did. Everything on it is fast, menu's, strart-up etc.
photos are located here: https://frenchfx.smugmug.com …/Jake-and-Ashley-Wedding/ (external link) if you want to see more, remember it's been 10 years for me, I'm much older, actually to old for this it about killed me lol.

Thanks and I hope this helps someone a bit.

None at all, the Sigma focused fast and accurately. The focusing issues I have had would have been resolved if I were using the tracking option, it has also happened to me with the RF 50mm. So, it's definitely me. I am not trusting the technology just yet with moving subjects. I am very happy with this Sigma lens.

Hi,

I am going to buy an EOS R8 soon.
I will use it to take mostly photos and not video so I didn't go for the R6/R6 Mk 2.

My 11 year old son can often be seen using my old 7D these days so it is time to take the plunge :-)
Can you wonderful folk please tell me what memory cards you bought for yours?

What is the raw file extension called?

Thanks.

I've had my R8 for jus ta bit over three months now and I'll add a few aditional thoughts about this camera.
I'm a photograher, I don't do movies. My photography includes Weddings, portraiture, international landscapes, macro, still life, wild life and birds. So very varied.

Firstly, it's small but beautifully made and finished. This camera is smaller than a Rebel but feels like a far more professional product in the hand.
The image quality I'm seeing from it is exceptional. I really belive the reports that this camera out resolves 30mp cameras such as the EOSR and 5Dmk4.
I like the way this camera feels. I find that I'm usually holding the lens and not the camera's weight.

I'm finding 2 to 3 stops better ISO ability and thus more cleaner images at higher ISO values. The DR, iso invariance and under exposed processability to be 2-3 stops better too. The images behave slightly different in how they react in Light Room.

The newer AI driven AF tracking system is impressively good. however, getting it to work out what you want it to track is the key issue. If it's an animal, human or bird, that's quite simple. However things like flowers (basically anything that doesn't have an eye) can be a little bit more tricky. Once it's locked on though..it's exceptional. I have re-mapped my three top right buttons to select which AF zone size, Which eye to detect and switching between Servo / single shot mode. This has massively improve the AF handling for me and I can flit between different types of photography with ease and speed.

When i'm using the viewfinder, I find that my nose sometimes moves the AF point on the back screen for some reason.
Sometimes, when changing setting on the LCD screen's Q mode I find that my hand gets close to the View Finder sensor and then blacks out the screen.

I miss the top LCD of my 5D3. But I'm really liking the EVF.
It's a bit freaky that the viewfinder is blank unless owered on.

I've had no problems with the very small battery. However, when it looses power it seems to drop through the bars very quickly.
My 2nd photographer borrow the camera for a shoot the other day and he has shooting anxiety and is a "Gimper" as a consequence. He manged to drain both batteries for only 1hrs shooting. Excessive image reviewing and shrpness checking will drain the battery in no time at all.
Big lenses that have image Stabilisers will drain the battery more too. So my Big ef 400mm f2.8 LIS can drain the battery quicker than say my ef 35mm f1.4 L.

So will I be keeping this camera? Yes, sort of. I really didn't like the Eos R when I tried it when it was first launched. It felt too much like an immature product. I didn't get to try out an R5, but this year I came into a bit of money and I was time to see if Canon's mirrorless had matured enough for me.
It certainly has and it's provoked me to seriously consider leaving DSLR's behind and going fully mirrorless.
My R8 has done it's brief for me, it's introduced me to the new world of Canon's RF system with the lowest risk and cost.
I prefer a more substantial camera in my hand. So in the next few months i'll be selling my 5D3's and investing in a R6ii to use as my primary camera. My R8 will become my 2nd camera. I like my two cameras to be identical as possible.
I think then, I'll wait for the new R5ii to arrive and maybe pick one up and replace the R8. But that's a discussion for later in year.

So in summary, it's a fantastic camera and far better than I expected. I'm really happy with it and I could easily live with this camera if it was my only camera body for years to come.
