I would (and did) get the 70-200 f/4.0. It's a very excellent lens for the money.

Check the reviews at this site: http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews (external link)

The new version of the 70-300 certainly looks very good in the test (a lot better than its predecessor).
Came as quite a surprise to me.

Best regards,
Andy

They are close optically, but the 70-200 is built much better. My main concerns with the 70-300 include the rotating front element, zoom creep, and several reports of unacceptably poor build quality. Even some owners of the newer and supposedly improved batches of this lens are reporting focal problems in portrait orientation.

Me, I'd go with the 70-300IS. But that 's just me: I like longer and I like IS . And I'd like the compactness & light weight of the 70-300IS. I miss my 75-300IS - and the new one is said to be better. Not that I'd trade the 100-400, but sometimes it's inconvenient to cart around. If I didn't have other priorities...

I had the 70/200f4L and i traded it for the 70/300ISDO.
No one of these is the perfect tele zoom.
The 70/300DO is not as sharp as the 70/200
The 70/200f4 lacks the IS, in fact is quite dificult to make sharp photos unlees you use monopode or tripod.

I can't really comment on the 70-300 but I absolutely love my 70-200 f/4L. I've since purchased a 2.8 IS but I still can't part with the f/4L. It's a real sweetheart.

I'm weighing the same choice. I'd recommend going to a local camera store and comparing the two, side by side. The 70-300 does have the extra reach, and IS. However, when you compare them side by side, the 70-200 is hands down the winner in focus speed, and build quality. Weight and size is basically a toss-up. The L just feels so much nicer.
