I own the R10 and the only lens I have for it is the RF 100-400. I have the 55-250 EF and I think the 18-55 EF lenses.
I'm looking for a lens for use at car shows.
Brand doesn't matter
Mount EF EFs RF RFs, I have the adapter.

What would be a decent lens for this purpose? A faster lens would be great, but most shows are outdoors. Budget, I'm not made of money and have no issue shopping used or refurb.

Thanks

A 70-200 f/2.8 would be my first choice, 85mm prime would be my second choice.

At first glance you may think it's strange to choose those longer focal lengths, but in my experience shooting cars is similar to shooting portraits. With cars, many people seem to want to get close with a wide lens, which can work well in some situations, but the stand out images are generally the ones where the photographer steps back with a telephoto or medium telephoto focal length.

I agree. I think that a slightly compressed image with a medium telephoto looks more natural than a distorted one from a wide-angle (unless one intentionally wants a distorted/emphasized image). But a wide-angle can be useful in busy situations by getting in front of crowds.

I think something like a 24-105mm zoom should do fine.

You can get some nice results using the 70-200 f2.8, especially background blur and subject isolation. Here's one shot at 85mm f3.2

Although it's not my favorite car show lens due to its size & weight. And sometimes 70mm is too much. I usually use my EF 24-70 f2.8 II, as that's
a good FL range for me.

I'd like a small, lightweight camera/lens for car shows. So I recently bought a Canon refurbished RP camera and a Canon RF 35mm f1.8 IS STM lens.
The lens is small, light, and reasonably priced at $399. I'll take it for a spin when it arrives.

My dream lens is the Canon RF 85 f1.2 L USM. Forum member mbartleyphoto has a few photos here...

But at $2600 I won't be buying it soon

At less than half the price of that, check this out: https://www.usa.canon.com …-rf24-105mm-f4-7-1-is-stm (external link)

Will allow you to go full frame if you go that route later. And it should pair well with your RF 100-400

And perhaps pick up a 50mm f/1.8 (either EF or RF flavors) when you want a shallow DOF for isolation.

Dug these up from a car show a while back. Both from the same show with the same lens (EF 24-105mm f/4L IS).
First at 24mm, second at 67mm. I think you can see that wide angle views have limited use.

Keep in mind that these were taken on a full-frame camera and nearly uncropped.

Different show with the cheapo EF 50mm f1.8

Again virtually uncropped from a full-frame camera.
