Hi,
I apologise if this is not appropriate or Ive asked in the wrong forum. I've only just joined and am finding my way around.

I have a Cannon 400D which I like, I know its far from the latest and greatest, if I am honest it is far better than I am so I do not see a need to update etc.

Ive set it to shoot in RAW and Large JPG. Which is slow and uses a lot of card space etc. I used to shoot in only RAW.

My main computers use Ubuntu Linux, does anyone know of any good software which can handle and process Cannon Raw ?

I tried GIMP, which claims it cannot handle Cannon Raw. Which is a shame as Ive spent a long time trying to learn that tool :)
Also found Shotwell, which can read the format and do some very basic adjustments. i.e simple colour, bright, contrast that's about all.

At a push, I can sometimes borrow a Mac but that is a pain for various reasons.

If anyone knows of a linux solution would you be so kind as to let me know?

Thanks
Jess.

Here's a list of Linux-compatible photo editors. Probably a good place to start.

EDIT: I just went down a little rabbit hole. You could also use emulators to run Windows apps with WINE or Mac OS apps with DARLING.

More rabbit hole findings.

Apparently there's a GIMP raw plugin. This article got more involved than I wanted to spend time with, but it might point you in a good direction.

Hi,
Thanks I found RawTherapee late last night. It seems to work well and looks as though it runs on most platforms.
I could not get DarkTable to run on the version I have.

Thanks again

I had not thought of using Wine, last time I looked at it ( many years ago ), it was basically limited to running MS Office and not a lot more.
Guess it has progressed a lot since then. Thanks I'll give it a try with the orig Cannon SW which came with the cam.

Thanks

Hi,
Thanks, yes I did follow the instructions. To use it you have to build from source, which is normally not a problem.
I'm on the newest version of Ubuntu, which does not have some of the lib's the tool needs to build so I could not get any further.

I did quite a lot of reading on this one and from what I can see, it makes GIMP load the image as a TIIFF, not as a RAW.

As I said I could not get far enough to try anything.

Thanks

I'm thinking DARLING might be a better option than WINE. There is a ton of Mac photo-editing software. Canon probably makes a Mac version.

And since OSX (macOS) has a BSD unix kernel (Darwin), DARLING (darwin for linux) might do better at emulation than WINE. I found out about DARLING after wondering if Linux could run OSX apps natively. (no.)

Have never heard of DARLING, apart from the joke in Blackadder Goes Forth :)

Cannon do still make the Cannon Photo Appication for MS Win and MacOS, sadly it does not support Catalina, which is what the mac I can borrow from time to time has.

Thank you, I will take a look.

Everyone here seems so nice, Thank you again to everyone who gives their time to help,
Best Wishes
Jess.

Have you tried Corel Aftershot Pro?

I really tried getting used to working with RAW both in Gimp and Rawtherapee but have (personally) never really found either of them to give me what I need with as little effort as possible (I'm just a happy amateur with a lot to learn about post processing).

I know it's getting a bit dated by now but for me Aftershot Pro 3 with the inclusion of (then) Athentech Perfectly Clear used to be the go to solution for me that took care of 90% of my needs with just a few clicks before I "upgraded" to a Windows 10 VM with GPU Passthrough that I fire up on my Linux Mint host whenever I need to work on photos. What I liked a bout it was that I usually didn't have to do more than apply Perfectly Clear to get good results - sometimes combined with slight noise reduction and a bit of sharpening - basically a couple of seconds pr image or just apply it to a whole folder.

Aftershot Pro is available as a 30 day trial, and is usually part of a yearly Humble Bundle Corel deal if you don't want to pay the full price (priced at 69,99€ at the moment)

Cameras: EOS M & M3 --- Lenses: 22mm EF-M, 18-55mm EF-M, FD 50mm f/1.4, EF-S 55-250mm IS II, Sigma 600mm f/8
Disclaimer:The fact that I'm slightly color blind with a crappy monitor and have little or no clue about PP doesn't prevent me from enjoying holding a camera - it just makes it harder to make my photos look normal to you...
